OK I know this post is gonna have a lot of you saying "can't say that!, she really is asking this?" But I figured I'd proceed anyway. My question is not really HOW to charge a battery...because that much is obvious. It's more, proper technique for safety of both person and motorcycle, as well as how to access it. To clarify, I've had my 454 for about a year now and have never had to charge the battery or even remove the seat... and today i'm wanting to take it out after storing it for 3 months over the winter and of course...battery is basically dead (lights will go on but motor will not start). So i tried searching for a lever of some sort (like on the bikes ive ridden previously) to remove the seat and access the battery but could not find anything. Could someone please give me a rundown of how to remove seat and access battery etc? Diagrams or pictures would be greatly appreciated. My bike is identical to this one - no major modifications : sites.google.com/site/pgroves/1986Kawasaki454LTD.jpgThanks so much! Jackie

There is no lever to unlatch the seat. to get to the battery:
1: open the rear storage compartment
2: you will see 2 bolts, they are 10 mm. get a ratchet and a deep well socket and remove these bolts.
3: when you have these bolts removed, take the storage compartment out (should pull straight out)
4 to remove the seat, you need to work the seat out from underneath the rear backrest pad. I just grab the top of the seat under the pad and pull it forward to clear the backrest.
5 the seat now should come forward and come out, there is a tab that is near the tank. make sure that when you reinstall the seat that you line up the tab molded on the seat to the tab on the frame. otherwise you may get a heck of a surprise when you put it back together and go for a ride
6 if you have done this right, you should be seeing a rat's nest of wiring on the fender and where the side covers converge is the ignitor and the battery (under that). Just remove the ignitor (held on with 2 bolts) to get to the battery.

Welcome aboard! Don't worry about the questions, that's what we're here for. You can charge it in the battery box or remove it, I think it's recommended to remove it, but I don't if it just needs a little nudge in the right direction. Just make sure to hook the leads to the proper terminals, if you run it backward it could get messy.
If you haven't already downloaded the toolbar do so, there is an online manual that will answer most of your questions. It will go into detail on how to check the battery before you charge. If it needs an extended charge I would remove it.
Good luck.

And you just might have to replace that battery.

It would be best to buy a battery tender. They come with an extension that hooks to both the positive and negative battery terminals. When you need to charge the battery you plug the charger into the extension already mounted on the bike. That way you don't have to bother with taking the seat off every time. Here is a picture of mine. The white plug is what the charger plugs into. It's a great time saver.
