So I started the bike no problem this morning an headed off to work got to work front door was locked so went to start bike to ride around to back door (usually unlocked) an when I hit the start button all I hear is a spinning sound like the gear is not contacting with anything just spinning freely... Im pretty sure the started is not the stock one as one bolt is missing and it moves around when Its starts, luckily I was able to roll start the bike an be on my way but has anyone ever had this happen? Is it easily fixed? or do I have to buy a "new" starter?
Thanks

Its the starter clutch, not the starter.

not much u can do.....it will have to be replaced. The stator cover and rotor/flywheel will have to be removed...the starter clutch is bolted to the backsidee of the flywheel. If u keep trying, sometimes the clutch will engage.

I just had a guy at work look at it an he said it sounds to him like the gear is not engaging the one at the end of the starter an I feel like that may be the problem cause the started is definitely not stock it was made to fit by who ever had it before me :/ also only the motor is spinning the chain that runs down from the starter is not moving what so ever

Before you do anything, you need to get the bolts back in the starter. There should not be any movement at all.I can't imagine how the bike even started at all.

By all means!!! Holy Cow...that is NOT good!! I don't think that is a 454/500 starter.......how do u know the gear is not engaging the chain?? Do u have the stator cover off?? the starter shaft is splined, as is the gear, so the starter and gear will nos slip...unless one of them is all stripped out. If that is n ot a 454 or 500 starter, u need to first get the proper starter for ur bike, and bolt it down.

I said I knew it wasn't the stock starter an no I don't have the cover off but I'm gonna start by getting a new starter (the RIGHT one) an go from there for now it's roll starting for me at least for today supposed to rain for the next week I swear I have the best timing for stuff to mess up on this thing lol

Hey, don't feel bad...we have all some of "those" days. U will need a new gasket for the cover...clean bothe the engine and cover good when re-assembling, and put the gasket on dry. Be careful when puting the cover on...the rotor magnets will try to jerk the cover outta ur hands, if ur not prepared. Try to check the starter clutch while u have the cover off, and check the chain also...that starter bouncing around could have damaged something.

ok so got the new starter (fits great!!) an it looks like the sprocket that connects the starter motor to the chain is missing??? I dont know where it is or if it was even there to begin with but im assuming that is what i need for the bike to start??

Yes,you need that sprocket.Any chance the sprocket will fit from the other starter,if it's not damaged?

Lucky it's only $30 from the local dealer an $15 for the gasket cheaper than I thought

The weird thing is that the sprocket wasn't there when I took off the engine cover I have no idea where it is but I'm planning on taking a good look in it today after I get to see if I can find it

GEAT NEWS!!! I found the sprocket an figured out what happened!!! What happened: The non stock starter got backed out of the gear sometime during my trip to work allowing for the gear to just fall but stay in the chain! After ordering a new sprocket I wanted to find the old one for fear that it was bouncing around in the case and upon further inspection found that it was still holding the chain so I simple unscrewed the starter backed it out reset the sprocket an pushed the new stock starter into the sprocket made sure it was snug screwed the starter back in an just turned it on for a quick lil test an BINGO my starter works!!! Just waiting on the gasket an also managed to cancel the new sprocket saving me $30 which I'm gonna use for the new oil change castrol 20w-50 it's been a good day lol

UPDATE: SHES ALIVE!!! After a week of waiting for those darn parts I got her back together and running starts a WHOLE lot better with the stock starter an doesn't leak oil any more (I'm assuming that the previous starter wasn't tight an oil was leaking around the seal new one fits like a glove )
