a good friiend of mine just got an 86 454 LTD. it is in pretty rough shape, but i believe i can save it. i havent started working on it just yet, but i noticed some things when we went and picked it up. i dont have alot of experiance on this particular bike so i thought id ask for some help.
1. there is no ignition. can i get one from the manufacturer, or is there an aftermarket place i can get one?
2. when the throttle is turned all the way, it clicks. not sure about that.
3. the starter may be bad. the guy he got it from said it needed a starter and battery.
4. the tank sounds like it has rust or dirt rattling around in it. would it be better to try and clean it out, or get a new one? never dealt with rust in a bike tank before.
thats my main concerns until i get into it. i appreciate the help.

WElcome. You can use a aftermarket ignition switch,I"ll P.M you a pic.If there's a starter problem it is most likely the starter clutch as that is th weak point. You may need to clean & put a liner in the tank as they are getting hard to find.

I had a tank for a Yamaha that was pretty rusty. If you rinse it out best you can. Get some phosphoric acid and pour it in and swish around to coat the inside. Let sit for 24 hours, then rinse it out with water, then water and a little baking soda. Swish that around and let sit about an hour. Then rinse with water and flush out real good. Spray the inside with some WD40. On mine it looked like a new tank inside....very nice.
I got the acid from a local paint store. 1 quart. they had to order it in but just took a couple days.

First thing you need to do is get a manual....it will be worth its weight in gold to you, to learn about your bike, and what to do and what not to do. The stator cover (on the side left side of the engine when sitting on the bike) has to be removed in order to remove and replace the starter. does the starter turn when trying to start the bike, or does the bike make a sorta clanking noise when trying to start? If the starter turns, the starter is not the problem.

That would be the starter clutch, it is behind the flywheel, which is in the stator housing cover, which u must remove to remove & install the starter. It does require a special tool; to remove the flywheel, which you will find on ebay, as well as the manual...I reccomend the manual from Kawasaki rather than Chiltons or Clymers.

Maybe a dumb question but I need to replace my starter clutch and could I not just use a M18-1.5 bolt as the puller?

What else could be my issue?

Check the gear, bolted to the flywheel.....could have a crack in it......if the gear is ok, go to the kawasaki dealer and get a set of the rollers and springs...that will fix it. The rollers wear and get "slick", and the springs get weak....remember how old things are.

Yeah, forgot to tell that.....the dealership will look funny and confused if you ask for parts for a 454, so ask for Vulcan or Ninja 500 parts.
