I bought a 1985 en450 for $400.00 the bike was in very bad shape but I have finished rebuilding the entire thing. The problem is when I have it running the idle will seem good but if I rev it and roll back off the throttle the idle will stay around 3500 RPM. It will come down after a minute or two but the longer it runs the longer it takes for the idle to come back down. Please Help.

Usually that's a sign of the idle mixture being lean... Does the bike otherwise run well? I would clean out the pilot jet at a minimum. Fill up with fresh gas, clean/replace air filters and set idle mixture at 2 turns out. Start bike and check for any vacuum/air leaks, which can lean out your mixture if you have any. Fix any leaks.
Once bike is warmed up, blip throttle and see if the RPMs drop quickly or if they hang up. If they still hang up, give the idle mixture screw another 1/4 T out. Repeat till the RPMs drop quickly, but not so quickly they dip below idle speed. Also when you blip the throttle it should be crisp and not hesitate or bog.

I have been through the carbs thoroughly. All the jets are clean and clear. I put new gas in it and the mixture screws are at three full turn out.

One more thing to check is that the throttle cables aren't binding up and you have some free play...

I just checked and I could not find any leaks. I did however block off the left side of the air box with my hand and the idle came down. when I took my hand off it went back up. other than the idle problem it runs great but rich. Covering the right side there is no change. No matter how far I unscrew the mixture screws the idle does not come down.

I'm having the same problem. Did you get it resolved. I'm going to once over the idle screw and two mix screws before hitting bed, while it's still warm. If that doesn't do it something on the forum will have to be the light bulb.

Make sure all your clamps for your carbs are snugg and tight then spray a bit of starter fluid around the boots while bike is running if revs go up you have a vaccum leak if not then it could be some other.

Thanks. Had the same thought after reading posts. The heads on the clamp screws are stripped, so they are getting replaced with a working screw.

Silly me, fixed the air leak and overtuned while carbs were off the bike. Took carbs that were in sync and decided to bench sync, which took them out of sync. It's running and I'm loving it. Currently it's the only transport as the truck is getting some overdue work done. Replaced the pan head screws on the clamps with m4x25 hex head. Had to slightly modify the clamps but no more worries of accidentally stripping pan heads. I'll try to get photos posted.
