I am having troubles with my 86 454 ltd starting. If it sits for a couple days or randomly it will not start. to get it to start I just dump a little fuel into the car and she fires right up and runs and idles great through the rpm range after that. I can shut it off and it will start up right away again but if it sits for a day or so i will have to do it again.

Sounds like your choke (enricher) is not working.Check lever & cable for proper movement.Cable may be broken/Seized.

Did you ensure that plungers are moving at the carbs??

Check to make sure the carb bowl drain screws are not leaking. They are the two small screws on the very bottom of the bowls.

Try this next time it won't start: before starting, IF you have the PRI setting on your petcock, switch it to that for about 30 seconds, then back to on, then try to start it. If it fires, you have a carb leak somewhere. The fuel level in the bowl is dropping, which would indicate a fuel leak and/or float levels not set correctly.
Eagle is probably right; although it may not be the drain screws, it sounds like there is a leak somewhere.

I am having the same issue. I checked my float bowls and they were both set at @ 17-18mm. I adjusted the valves to .18mm INTAKE, .23mm EXHAUST. I cleaned the carbs and put the factory jets back on. Butterflies are bench-synced. No mods except I removed the [emissions] air valve from the top of the valve cover and capped off the 2 ports, capped the R side carb vacuum port and airbox hole where the thick house went in. Don't know what to do next.

Without getting into TOO much detail, twin carbs on an inline motor are a #&/!! to set up correctly; for most people the left carb gives trouble, being that it's the side the bike leans to when on the kickstand. I did exactly what you said to do. I switched the petcock to PRI for about 30 seconds, then back to ON. It fired right up and stalled after a minute or so. I checked the level of the float bowl using the clear tube method (tube connected to float bowl drain on bottom of carb) and the fuel level in the carbs was even with the float bowl mating surface. Whether it maintains that level while idling I can't see...obviously not since it's dying. I don't see any fuel leaking anywhere. I have the clear gas overflow tube hooked up and there isn't any gas coming out of it. There isn't any visible gas anywhere.
