I just got an '86 and getting ready to adjust the valves. I was wondering if the heads should be retorqued while I am there?
I went through the carbs recently and it was still running rough so I used carb cleaner to check for leaks. I couldn't find any on or around the carbs or vacuum lines, but when I sprayed the engine on the right side between the block and heads, the idle changed slightly. I assume this isn't normal. Should or can I retorque the heads while I am doing the valve adjustment and how should that be done.
Is there anything else I should do while it is opened up? I plan on doing the valves tomorrow night. This is my only transportation at the moment and I wanted to have plenty of time to deal with any surprises before I have to be at work Monday morning. I have found that it takes 1 to 2 weeks to get even the simplest of parts.
Thanks.

Seeing as its an 86, I would have thought that head would have bee re-torqued at some point! but if you have the equipment it wouldn't hurt.
Re the tickover variation - check how tight the inlet rubbers are both on the carb and cylinder end.
I would also check carb balance whilst I had it stripped.....

What is the proper procedure for retorquing the heads. I looked through my haynes manual and couldn't find anything about that. I put my torque wrench on the outermost head bolts just to see what they were at and when I put pressure on the torque wrench, it clicked and immediately turned a bit. I stopped and rechecked it and it didn't click but just turned. I put about 1/4 turn on it and it didn't get any tighter so I stopped. I don't want to strip them out since they are aluminum (I think).
I got the valves adjusted and it helped a lot. It still seems to surge at about 25-35 mph. It also seems to have a miss. I have new NGK plugs but maybe I should change the wires.
