Is there any other reason than bad clutch plates for the clutch not to work? I tried to tighten my cable and the cable moves and it moves the clutch leaver but while in gear the back tire doesn't move any more than normal. I guess what I'm asking is there a cheaper fix than a clutch rebuild?

Something don't sound right here.Do you have around 1/2" of free play at the outer end of clutch lever. Also are you downshifting into 1st.These bikes will not shift up into 2nd with the rear wheel already in motion.

She while on the center stand bike off it will shift through all the gears no problem (no help from the clutch only using tdc trick) the clutch leaver moves all the way forward when you squeeze the clutch on the handle bar but it doesn't free up the rear wheel while in gear (bike is off)

Bike been sitting a long time??? Sometimes the wet clutches will stick if setting for a very long time, especially if the oil is old and black. These bikes use a "wet clutch"...the engine/transmission oil is the same oil in the clutch....all together.

It did sit about a year before I got it and wasn't road worthy for a while before that. But the oil is new (visually verified) I don't know what kind of oil was used (saw on another thread the wrong kind could cause clutch trouble) could the wrong kind of oil cause something like this? If so would a change to Rotella-t help at all?

Yes Rotella=T is a good oil.As Eagle stated the clutch plates are likely stuck together & need a good jolt in first gear with the bike running & not on jack to get them to unstick.....It's a common problem on these bikes.

bottom the front wheel up against something solid (tree, brick wall, etc) and hold the front brake on, to prevent the bike taking off. It that fails to loosen it up, then the only alternative, would be to remove the clutch, and disassemble it and put it back together....might as well replace the discs if it comes to that.
