Just got my 86 Kawasaki 454 about 2 months ago. It is my first bike and I have been enjoying it. But now it won't start when it gets below 40 unless I put a heater on it for about an hour or so until the motor gets warm. And when I do start it I have to adjust the idle way up to keep it running and them back down after it warms up real good. Once warmed up it runs and rides great.
PS. I already changed the plugs. They are making a nice blueish purple spark and put some lighter oil in it just now. Still the same... Help please

Help please Needs a valve adjustment.....One of the sign of valve adjustment needed is hard/no starting cold due to valves to tight & no compression. !)

I would love to adjust my valve. Do I need anything special, tools parts etc?

I would love to adjust my valve. Do I need anything special, tools parts etc? Here is a great guide to valve adjustment from the Vulcan forums.Just disrearguard the parts about speddo removal.Don't forget about the tach drive on ours before you remove the valve cover......I slip a piece of vacuum tubing over the tip of the drive after I remove the tach cable. It keeps the drive from falling into the engine.I also glue the dowels into the head so you don't need to worry about them. www.vulcanforums.com/forums/50-vulcan-500/2609-how-adjust-your-valves.html

+1 on the dowels. Very first time I took the cylinder head off a dowel silently dropped into a well of oil next to a cam and disappeared, all of which I can tell you now having found it but spent some time wondering where it went or if it was ever there to begin with! Probably worth getting two sets of feeler gauges as well so you can leave the same feeler in one side while adjusting the other. A worn out battery can make cold starts difficult and when the battery is just starting to give up it will still make a very convincing attempt at starting but just doesn't have the full power for a cold start.
