Hey thanks Zekkfett. I read through the steps in your link and I think that I can do them. Your pictures were a big help. The repair manual doesn't have real clear directions or decent pictures. I will let everyone know how I make out when I do change them.

The 88 & newer models do not have the air assist,as it was discontinued.Yes you are pushing down the inside of the fork so you can release the snap ring.

Hey thanks blain, that explains why I don't see it. Lol ok so I am assuming it takes quite a bit of downward pressure to expose this snap ring? What does the ring look like? Is it metal or plastic? This ring, does it sit under a lip on the top edge of the fork tube? Is the ring flexible enough that i pry it up over the lip? And I am guessing that I have to reinstall this ring when I re-assemble the fork? Do you know about how far down the top of the fork will move? I moved it about 1/16 of an inch. I am just trying to clarify what I am doing so I don't damage anything that I need to put back on at the assembly. I really appreciate the help everyone is giving. It makes me feel good that I am actaully making the repairs on my bike myself. And god knows it is saving me about $200 in labor charges.

It's a metal snap-ring, you should only have to push down just slightly to be able to remove it.

Zekkfett your directions were a life saver. To be fair, the credit goes to Member chunk for the initial post with instructions, but glad we could be of help!
