I am preparing to lower the rear with ls650 shocks but hear that the drive belt may need to be adjusted. Is this true and how do you 'loosen' the drive belt?

i could be wrong here but why should you need to adjust the belt , by putting smaller shocks the wheel and engine have not moved only the seat part of the frame is lower, if i am wrong someone will have the answer

When then the rear wheel go up,as when going over a bump the belt tightens. That's why you need free play and adjust the belt with the wheel on the ground. When you put on shorter shocks, your essentially pulling the wheel up higher, resulting in the belt getting tighter.

You loosen the belt by moving the rear wheel forward. You need to loosen the rear axle and adjusters to let the wheel move ahead. When you tighten the adjusters there are marks on each side of the frame for alignment. Both sides must be the same.when the belt is adjusted properly you should have about 1/2" movement in the center of the belt.

So I just put the Suzuki shocks on (looks really good this way and a better feal to the height). I put the bike back flat on the ground and the belt already has around 1/2 to 3/4 inch of play at the middle. Does this indicate poor adjustment by the previous owner or maybe a worn belt?

I would say that the belt was a little to loose before you started.Your about right now.
