Are the forks on the '85 454 thru the '90 454 all the same? I want to know if they are the same tubes on all 6 years? I am trying to figure out if I can use a tube from an '85 454 on my '89 454?

Hey blaine, question about the air assist tubes. I did order the set of tubes from the '85 bike. I understand the tubes are basically the same with the exception the air assist on '85-'88. Question though, if I am to change the fork seals in these tubes (ones with air assist), is the amount of fork oil still 355cc? Also how do I put the air back into the tubes and how much do I put in? Just covering my bases here so in case I do change the seals on the new tubes. Thanks.....

I'll answer....same amount of oil....forks are exactly the same...air assist uses just a little air, I forget the maximum, but would not go over about 8 lbs ( the more air, the harder on the seals), and use a hand pump to install air. The air assit forks have a valve stem on the top just like a tire valve.

Thanks Eagle, that helps. I did get and install the forks I ordered off EBAY. They are off an '85 454. They are in better condition than the forks I took off the bike. They look great and are not leaking. Hopefully I will get a couple years out of them before I do have to change the seals. If I ever do have to change them I know how now so it should only take a couple hours to do both sides. Thanks for all the help guys.....!!

would not go over about 8 lbs ( the more air, the harder on the seals) +1 to that. 8 psi is what I run in mine, gives a fantastic ride. If you ride 2-up, are really aggressive in your riding, or have raised the tubes in the triple trees, might go to about 12 psi, or around there. I have seen air assist tubes literally blow out fork oil & dust seals. Plus the mess of oil in there too. Manual states 36 psi as the max, but I wouldn't go anywhere near that. If you don't have the level of firmness that you want with 10 weight fork oil and 8 psi of air, might be time to move up to a 15w fork oil.

I´ll just ask a question about forks, maybe someone can help. I´ve changed fork seals, but there´s oil going thru the seals and remains on forks. I´ll try to change them once more, but I don´t know what is the problem there... is there too much oil in forks or what? How much oil do you guys put in the forks?

Oil should not go thru tthe seals, unless they were damaged when installed. Now, don't get mad at me for asking, but did you replace just the external dust covers, thinking they were the seals? I ask that, because another member did just that, not knowing the actual seals were inside the forks.

no, I have replaced both the fork seals and washers, it might be that they have got damaged while installing.

Hi guys. New to riding and this forum. Just purchased a 1988 Kawasaki 454LTD. I need to replace the fork seals. Can someone guide me on how to do this PLEASE? I'm pretty handy so I figure I should be able to do it myself if given some information on how to. Thanks

hi. my advice buy a manual it's all in there step by step. for someone to to do a write up on the full procedure would be very lengthy to do. and when you do the seals buy a set of bushes at the same time it's easier to both than take them apart again if find the the seals continue to leak after replacement.
