Has anyone installed an aftermarket ignition switch? I would like to replace my switch along with relocate it down by the motor.

Can you send to me too please?
Sounds like a good alternative to my starter button issue.
Thanks

Sky, the switch does not replace the starter button, just the ignition switch. The switch on our bikes, due to age, etc, can fail, due to the plastic cover getting old and brittle....when trying to unsnap the plastic cover to clean the crud out of the switch, the cover breaks, and some of the little parts can be lost, or the cover will not stay on, rendering the switch useless.

I realize that but was considering making it a "turn-start" switch also like cars used to have.

Well....I would think u could do that. It would require some additional modification, adding to, & changes to the wireing harness. I have no diagram as to what/how those changes, etc would be, and any switch with the start position would have to be "modified" to work. I'm gonna be honest, and say that the switch diagram that I have & use, would not help you very much, if any, and I really do not want to feel responsible, if whatever changes were made to the wireing of your bike, if something adverse happened. I happily help those that wish to replace their ignition switch itself, but the changes you want, I must respectfully, not get involved in. I am sorry if this upsets you, but I ask you to please understand my point of view.

Now, having said that, Sky, u have got my mind working some. Think I'm gonna pick up a universal switch (a cheap one) as soon as I can, and do some 'spearmintin....perhaps, I can get somethin to work out, that would be of benefit to those that would like to do what u propose. If any of y'all wanna jump in and do some figgerin with me, feel free to do so, as I am, by far, not the best at wireing. ;D Those that I have sent the switch info to, if u want to, start with that, and see what we can do to "activate" the start function on a universal switch, I believe that would be the easier way to do it. PM me back with whatever anyone comes up with, as we do not want to post this "in the open", just as I don't post the switch diagram " in the open".

Re-locating to stock switch is a lot more work, due to the number of wires that need to be extended. Will send to ur e- mail.

I planned to just separate the harness then trim to the location, easy peasy...my last builds wiring was a nightmare, non stock and nothing matched up, so say an engine wire started pink it got attached to a yellow on the harness, then ended attached to a green on the component...still fun though. I'll wire up a couple of switch type options. I had a couple of electronics and electrical engineering classes in college so that should help a little.

Jetblack....When u get into the 454 wireing harness, i don't think u will find it as "easy" as I think u think you will...course, I'm not very good with wireing harnesses...this one has wires that tie into other wires, that don't really make a lott of sense. Like...what was hot is now a ground, and what was a ground is now hot...if u know what I mean. From uour description of your first job, the 454 harness will be just as bad, hopefully, not worse. When GWK built the last KIT, he started from scratch, and built his own wireing harness. Redbull....is your current stock ignition switch bad?? if not, all u need to do is find the "new" place where u want to put it, and cut and add enough wire to each existing wire that goes to the switch, to reach that spot.

There are a lot of junctions, as each wire leaves one component and heads for another on the switch; for sure. Eagle you have it right; it's easier to extend(extension cord method) the wire to the new location. Tapping into the same color won't work; as you can easily bypass a junction it needs to connect too further up the chain of events. The only other way is to disassemble and remake the harness. I personally prefer the "extension cord method", out of ease and simplicity. A new ignition switch typically has 3 labels: Battery, Starter, ACC. If anyone is wondering about the switch wiring for a new switch: The old switch white wire goes to the battery connection on the new switch. The yellow to the starter on the new switch. The red, blue, brown/white striped go to accessory(ACC) But as stated, you can't just grab the white wire near the battery and tie in...For example: When the white leaves the switch it then goes to the fan relay, then through a fuse, then through the regulator/rectifier, and then finally to the battery. If you tied it in right at the battery; you would lose all function to the radiator fan, the fused connection, and the regulator/rectifier. If you make a new harness you have to write out each junction you want to keep and include it, in the new wire. It helps to get some yarn of the colors; cut the first piece of yarn the length it needs to be then tie corresponding connections along the length of the yarn, to where they need to be. So you can build a real life mock up without hacking into anything, when it's right then layout the wires and copy the yarn mock up. You can also use a drawing program; but I like doing the yarn too because it's something tangible and at the correct length.
