I picked up some savage shocks off the suzukisavage.com forum. I decided to take them apart and clean them up before I mount them on the bike. The process is fairly easy, first I built a spring compressor rig to gain access to the locknut and upper mounting eyelet (under the upper spring hat). I made the rig from hardwood plywood and 3/8" rod: Here are the shocks: The shocks mounted in the compressor: You can now see the locknut, which was under the rubber bump stop. I securely held the upper mounting eyelet with an adjustable wrench and loosened the locknut. However the eyelet wouldn't come off the shock shaft, instead the shaft just rotated. With a pair of vise-grips, just under the lock-nut I was able to hold the shaft and remove the eyelet. Then it was a matter of backing off on the compressor and the shock was disassembled:

FYI, lowering the bike with savage shocks (S40/LS650) will increase belt tension ~ 5 mm.
