The pictures of the bike were taken on the same day i got it, the previous owner had no idea what to do with the bike and couldn't get it running, I plan to give it a good home and a new look!

Welcome to our family....read thru the forum, and u will find out what the things u should do first and more about what to do as you go along. The more you read the forum, the more u should learn....from both the mistakes others have made (so u don't make them), and things others have done to get their bikes runing right, and keeping them that way. We are all here to help.

Welcome aboard Ahh shakers...you have my interest. If it's currently a runner, I'd like to hear the how the shakers sound if you have a video somewhere. ;D I have some on order, and have no idea how they are going to sound. I'll be nice to see what you come up with.

Here's an update, Iv been going over the bike to see what it needs and the list is starting to build up slowly The first problem i come across was the broken steering lock and missing regulator Next problem was the oil level window just didn't look right to me It looks like there's water mixed in with the oil so time to dump it all out for a look Out comes nearly 6 ltrs of this stinking muck! Next thing is to pull off the water pump housing for a look at the seals which turn out to be in fare condition but worth changing anyway Time for the rocker cover to come off for inspection and all looked ok at first site but then i noticed that the tach drive missing!! I looked for it in the worst place it could have possibly gone and there it was wedged next to the cam chain judging by the looks of it, the tach drive has been down there a while as its pretty worn on one side, I tried for 3 hours to get it out with no luck I think its time to drop the engine out and do i top end rebuild with new gaskets More to come soon!!

I strongly suggest u obtain your own copy of the kawasaki manual before tearing the engine down....this engine has some things that are done while re-assembling, that are different from others.

I have a PDF of the EN450 Haynes manual, what's the main concern with a top end strip down? any advice would be great

When re-assembling, torqueing the head down properly, and setting the cams and cam chain (timing) properly, are the big things.

sad to see anything treated like this was, but i think you go it at the right time. The damage looks to be minimal and it more a matter of cleaning it up.

Take pictures with a cell phone or other digital, ziplock bags with labels...just like a crime scene...take a picture, bag and tag. On the bright side the tach shaft stayed put when it fell in there, internal damage couldve been a lot worse.

Is your that far, i would suggest cleaning up the frame, i mean the worst part is over LOL. you'll end going through the harness at some point, and it never hurts to check the swings arm bearings out.

Several of our members have made posts about watching/preventing that tach drive shaft from dropping out of the valve cover when removing to adjust valves. This is what the result can be, if this advise is not followed. The best idea, in my opinion, comes from Blaine, who suggested the use of a piece of vacum line pushed over the shaft, before valve cover removal, which is what he does. Your "old" head would have likely been ok to use, if the damaged rocker was replaced. If I might make a suggestion....since u know there has been "chewing up of some metal".....u might want to pull the pan, and check for metal shavings in the pan, and on the oil pick-up screen. Any shavings can stick to, and clog up the screen, limiting the oil pick-up ability, therefore, not providing adequate engine/transmission oiling.

agreed, and it is a good time to check the bottom end over. you have water in the oil, make sure it didn't starve the crank and bearings.

for the slip on exhaust that you have, was it supported anywhere?

for the slip on exhaust that you have, was it supported anywhere? I have mine supported back at the original mount on the frame.I made my header pipes long enough so mount on mufflers would line up with mount on frame.Just had to fab my own hangers.

Always use some type of muffler hanger...just letting them hang, causes undue strain on the bend at the engine, leading to breaking, and welding them only lasts so long before they have to be replaced.
