How did you raise the clearance between the rear fender and tire like that?

That is basically, the stock look.....a large number of our members install shorter shocks to lower the rear fender closer to the tire. Doing this also lowers the seat height, as well as the rear of the bike....the belt tension must be re-adjusted, when doing this.

One of the previous owners of mine must have done that already. Mine is really low, probably no more than 3-4 inches of clearance between the rear tire and the inner fender. I've never heard any scraping and haven't seen any damage to the inner fender so I'm thinking it should be OK. I'll have to keep that in mind if/when I go to change the shocks. Thanks! The recomended shorter shocks are those from a Suzuki LS650, or Honda Rebel 450 (not the 250, they are not strong enough). You can measure the length of the shocks on your bike and compare that to the specs for the 454...that will tell you for sure if the shocks have been changed.

Has anyone tried the shocks from a Vulcan 500...? Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using the ProBoards Mobile App

Not to knock your knowledge, (and you know I have the UTMOST respect for you ) but are you positive?? From the pics I've looked at, it seems as though the coils on the 500's shocks are a lot closer together... They very well could be the same shock, but it seems to me that with the Vulcan being lower, with about the same midline of the swingarm; wouldn't the Vulcan sit a bit higher...? To my lack of knowledge, I've never even ridden a Vulcan 500, or looked that closely at one. Or had one of its shocks in my hand. The Vulcan 500 has never been a popular bike for folks to bring into my shop. sunset, I think I've only seen about 3 here in Indiana my entire life. - - Edit The more I look at pics of both bikes stock, side by side; I'm about convinced it's not the same shock. The Vulcan's shock looks physically shorter, plus if you look at the springs themselves, the Vulcan has a progressive spring, our bike doesn't... Also, if you look at the mounting ANGLE of the shocks, they are both about the same angle, which would give the Vulcan about the same rear height as our bikes, no?

Shock mounts on the Vulcan swingarm are different, as well as the swingarm is longer and rear half of the frame is different. Now, on the newer Vulcan 500s, the shocks may be different...I don't have but very little knowledge on them. The models up until about 97/98 are the same. The newer models of the Vulcan 500 are basicaly, the 800 frame, using the 500 engine, and also returned to the chain drive.....then, they quit making the 800.

The fact that the swingarm is 2-3 inches longer escaped me last night. Brain-Stinker on my part. Even if the shocks were close to the same angle on both bikes, the longer swingarm would give it the 2-3 inches of drop that the Vulcan has. And I did look up the part numbers, and they are the same. So to those of you out there that want a replacement for the stock shock, there ya go. Cheaper than trying to find a used replacement for a bike that is over 20 years old, and PRAYING that it's still good. You can just get a pair from a newer model Vulcan 500. (They stopped making them in '09) Nice.

How did you raise the clearance between the rear fender and tire like that? Sent from my One using proboards The shock is (I think) 1/2" longer or mabie 1" Thinking about putting old shocks spring on this new one as it does stand higher.
