Well I moved the foot pegs and the gear shifter, so I had to make an exhaust as the stock one didnt fit anymore. Lots of pie cuts and a MIG fixed that. So I had my first ride of the year today slight flat spot around 4000, not sure about the top end yet as it had brand new rings. Ohh and does exhaust wrap smoke! Holy crud does that stuff stink!!! Got up to 60mph which is around 6000. Cant push new rings harder than that. Dang I love my 454

That's some job you've taken on, what's the new riding position like?

Really comfortable, I can easily stand up when going over bumps. Though the new exhaust is even still too loud even after I re-packed the mufflers with glass mat. I rang a exhaust performance shop today (Cone Engineering and spoke to Craig, great guy) to ask how I can make this exhaust quieter. 45 min later I learnt that 16 gauge steel is what I should have used. I need to move the cross pipe to within one to one and half foot from the exhaust valve, so rhe stock exhaust could be quieter and have more performance if this cross pipe would be moved forward. One reason I made the new exhaust was that I didn't like the constrictor that our exhaust has thats 5 inches from the exhaust valve. So nowI have a 1 1/2" pipe all the way out. My cross pipe is in the space behind the sump so I moved it back by another eight inches. Well I've trashed the low to mid range performance, not just messed it up a bit. But even the stock exhaust isn't the best either. The exhaust port on the engine block is about 1" in diameter, so thats the size the exhaust pipe should be for four to five inches from the exhaust port. This will eliminate exhaust gas turbulence. Plus at the end of the smaller inner pipe it should have a Velocity Stack to make the gas evenly flow. (I do like the look of a 1 1/2" exhaust so I'll put a inner pipe in it) Sometimes its difficult to get reliable info as to what works or not. "Buy that, its chromed it'll go faster" But this guy really knew a lot about true performance exhausts. So we can make our exhausts perfom a lot better. Move the cross tube closer to the exhaust port (one foot away, probably at the front of the sump just under the radiator) And make the kink in our exhaust tube into a five inch tube with a Velocity Stack at the end, then going into the main exhaust tube. Any way, ride hard and safe all

So in a while I'm going to make a new exhaust (insert dollar dropping scream) and put my bike on a dyno to see the difference between the two. I used to work with a bloke who has a dyno at home (right cause everyone has a dyno in the shed) I reacon we can get a good performance gain with a better exhaust. I'll post what I get but this'll be at the end of this year.

Nice work. Sure would love to get more information about your rearsets! Closeup pictures? Interested in selling a set to me?

Gday Michael the pegs are just the original just moved back (oh and chopped up a bit) shortened actually. I had to move the gear shifter. Cut a piece of tubing, inserted bronze bushes to help things turn better and welded it on top of the frame with gussets (love gussets) So now the selector turnbuckle faces backwards (chopped that too and added gussets well two pieces of 3/16 rod) Cutting the peg mounts off was easy enough, just really really slow so I didn't touch the frame. The left side footpeg has a keyway so it only needs one bolt. The right has two bolts (no keyway) So now the rear break cable loops under the airbox. It works! But the kicker..... Oh I almost said a French word as my daughter says... Now the exhaust wont fit ... #&*¥... So I made an exhaust.Actually the exhaust has moved the peak power from 6000 - 7500 to 7000 to 9000 with a lot more top end grunt. dang thing does 110mph (gps speed) Look man if you want the pegs done it'll take 2 full days, I'm in Wisconsin and $100 will do it. I'd take photos but my bikes in the shed and it's totally convinced I'm seeing someone else as I haven't gone for a ride in over 2 months, keeps on swearing at me in Japanese, but thats ok I only speak Australian So if your around Wisconsin (after the snow blows away) I'll do it for sure but it'll take me 2 days and may need a new exhaust. Or I could weld something over the pipes (hmmm yea) That'd only take one day (I ramble) Look ya wanna do it wait for no snow and come for a ride to Wisconsin. Send me a PM if your interested.

As my bike hasn't got the original peg locations I'd need your bike. I'll get more photos up here for you to look at if you want to do it as well.

Thanks Gonzo for that informative and very enjoyable response, I got a kick out of that. I'm in Florida and won't be riding to Wisconsin but thanks for the generous offer! You've still given me information to ponder so I thank you for that. Take care.
