Hey folks. I’ve been working on an 88 454. I have been trying to figure out why the headlight and turn signals won’t turn on. I think there is a short or bad connection between the left control switches and the dash. The turn signal and headlight and high beams lights on the dash do not light up, but my neutral light does turn on.
When I run some clip wires from my battery to the headlight itself, the headlight works. When I used a test light and checked the connector at the headlight, it was getting power.
The brake light works fine. Sometimes the turn signals will kick on but only for the rear and when they do, the left is the only one that works and it just stays solid and does not click on and off like it normally would. Other times, they won’t come on at all. The front turn signals don’t come on at all. The horn did work, but now doesn’t.
I checked the fuses inside the dummy horn. They are fine.
Would a whole replacement left handlebar control switch assembly solve this?

Hey Blaine,
So, weird scenario. When I recently checked the valve clearances, I disconnected the headlight wiring to the throttle underneath the gas tank. Then, when I put it all back together and connected those wires, the headlights came on. The headlight worked great until I fired the carbs apart again to check and set the float height. Now, the headlight doesn’t come on at all (just like before). I didn’t touch the headlight cables when I took the carbs off. Any thoughts?

Interesting update. I noticed that the choke cable was caught behind the radiator cap and I moved it. As soon as I did, the headlight came on.
