Hello everyone! I am a brand new 454 owner, and it is my first running bike ever. I picked up an '87 with 18k on it. It runs like a champ, but it has a few small niggles. One is that it smells fairly strongly of gas when I come to a stop at a red light. Is this something to worry about? I've checked for leaks, and everything is very clean. No drips anywhere, and it has no problems idling/running.

Years ago I had the mystery fuel smell with a van and could not find any sign of a leak but eventually discovered a hairline crack in a fuel line that was spraying a fine mist of fuel vapour onto the manifold (and probably igniting) hence no trace of the leak! Check its not just the exhaust you are getting downwind of then take a closer look with the bike warmed up and running on the stand. A stuck carb float will leak petrol all day (with a non-vac petcock), usually back into the airbox first. Work backwards from the carb fuel line to the petcock and tank, there might be an inline filter. If your bike still has the emissions kit fitted then access to this area is a PITA. Always worth another look where a suspected fuel leak is concerned.

Thanks! I'll go through it carefully before it starts getting too cold to work in the garage.
