I have an ‘87 454ltd that I’m working to get going again and it definitely needs work. Hadn’t run since 08 or 09. Finally have keys made.
I’m guessing the battery is under the seat, how do you get to it? I don’t see anything obvious.
Fluid wise, does the engine and trans/clutch share the same fluid? If so how much and what kind? Also the coolant…how do you check it and fill it?

open up the back toolbox and you will see 2 bolts, take these out and the seat will come off

Try to get the blue service manual. My guess is you're looking at a fair bit of work but easy enough in the right order and with the right tools. Hopefully you've not got the emissions kit fitted as that just makes everything a complete PITA and can be scrapped but then you also need to plug the ports up. In terms of stripping it down I think the tank, radiator and cylinder head has to come off, you can test the thermostat, fan switch, clean the coolant system out and have good access to all the jobs that require it before you put her back together. Definitely a carb clean and rebuild kit, new filters, valve clearance adjustment and with any luck she will fire up and run. Heat the carb rubbers with a hair drier to avoid bleeding knuckles, be careful removing the head that the rev gear doesn't drop in the engine and the rest is standard 500 twin maintenance.

Hooked a battery up just to see if anything happens. Nothing happens other than the tail light coming on.
No response from any of the buttons or warning lights regardless of where the key is placed.
Do these have a security system on them?

Finally got it to wake up after cycling the key many times. Horn works, all the warning lights work, lights work. Can’t get the starter to work.

Traced the wiring problem back to either the starter solenoid or the starter button itself. Starter cranks good.
Had it running real quick. Fuel tank selector valve is leaking so that’s the next thing to fix.
