This is a mod to make the second generation (Ninja) flywheel work on our bikes. The second generation flywheel has a one piece magnet and does not have the problem of exploding like the first generation flywheel, and is much easier to find. CAUTION: The directions must be followed carefully. If the grinding is not done accurately the timing will be altered. Also any grinding must be done as gentle as possible so as not loosen the magnet. www.ex-500.com/index.php/topic,9980.0.html

Ok, Blaine....ref our previous PM "discussion" about this: Now I am understanding the difference in the two flywheels more clearly (magnet). It does seem, however, that they are talking about using this flywheel on the Ninja & Vulcan 500, not the 454. If so, it still will not work, as the 500 and 454 flywheels are different as to the fireing of the engine..the 500 flywheel will not work on the 454.

Yes,I agree that the two engines fire differently. That is why you modify the "trigger" on the flywheel,so it matches the "trigger" on the original. That's why I stated that it must be done carefully so you don't alter the timing(firing) from the original.

The way I am understanding the posts on that forum, the later model Ninja flywheel is being modified to work on the earlier 500, not the 454. Someone that is a member of that forum needs to ask the question to clarify if they are meaning that, or are they using the flywheel on a 454. That would clear the whole thing up. That is a 500 forum, not a 454 forum....I think they are working on a 500, not a 454.

And what would this help with? This is interesting.

The flywheel on our 454s, due to age, and sometimes using wrong methods of removal, fail, in that the magnets separate from the flywheel, or break. These flywheels are no longer made, and replacement good used ones are scarce and quite costly. And, when the flywheel fails, and the magnets break, the flywheel is n o longer usable......no flywheel equals, in actuality, no usable engine....sad, but true. If there is a way to "make a replacement", it would be of a great help to 454 owners. As of now, I personaly know of none, unless this posted procedure works for the 454. And the question continues, as to that.

I just checked, the 454 and the early EX500 flywheels are the same exact part number. So they SHOULD interchange.. And the mod should work on the 454.

But what does this mod improve? I'm dying to know, I'm opening up my bike this weekend for a valve adjustment.

I have not seen one, but reading the post, it sounds like the second generation flywheel has a solid magnet instead of the multipule magnets, like ours.

Qwerser, it doesn't sound like this improves anything. It just makes a flywheel not meant for an engine, to work. 454 flywheels are hard to come by, Vulcan 500's are not.

Ohhhhh. I thought this was a mod to the original flywheel. Well good to know, that if I need another one, for some reason, I can do this?

But what does this mod improve? I'm dying to know, I'm opening up my bike this weekend for a valve adjustment. The second generation flywheel has a solid magnet. The early ones had 6 smaller magnets that sometimes came loose & would make a real mess of things.

The good news is that it will. I bought a 2nd generation EX500 flywheel and modified it following the directions. It worked perfectly. So if you find one at a good price, it may be worth going ahead and buying it and making the modification. Hopefully this might help someone out if your thinking about going this route. Just take your time and go step by step with the directions.
