I recently got a 1985 and cleaned the carbs and did valves. It ran pretty good but was lacking in mid range and general acceleration. It looked like it had a small slice in the diaphragm in one of the carbs. I put a little rubber cement over that spot and it seemed to run good except for acceleration. I since acquired an '86 that would start and idle only. I cleaned the carbs off that bike (I am surprised it even ran) and removed one coil on the spring and put 2 3mm washers on the needle. The mods I was going to do to my bike. I put those carbs on my '85 ( the diaphragms on that one looked good) It seems to be a new bike as far as acceleration goes but seems to surge as if it has a miss. Any idea what it could be?

By the way, I also removed the air valve above the valve cover and capped off the 5/8" ports. One of the caps blew off while test riding it and I used a clamp on it.

Make sure you have no vacuum leaks & that the diaphrams are sealed properly. It easy to get one of the edges of the diaphrams out of the groove.

i have a question concerning these diaphragms in the top of these carbs? is there any way around using them all together, the one for my left carb is completely torn to shreds and i priced these things all over the internet, ridiculous at $95 for the cheapest i can find. And if there is no way around replacing, any idea where i might find one at a reasonable cost, sorry i'm unemployed and trying to get this thing back on the road a it is my only form of transportation right now.

Paul No way around it unless you can find a set of carbs,They must be in good shape with no rips or tears or the bike will never perform properly.
