Hello everyone, I just got an 86 about 2 weeks ago and have started tearing into it to make it run like it is supposed to. The previous owner let is sit outside a bit, so a little work needed to be done to get it back to it's previous glory. I started by cleaning off the spider webs, pulling off all the smog stuff and draining all the fluids. I then pulled off the carbs, pulled the valve cover and adjusted the valves. I cleaned out the carbs and put in new gaskets. I drilled out the mixture port, and commenced to reassembling. After refilling all fluids and double checking everything, I started the bike back up and set the idle to around 1200. I adjusted the A/F mixture and the carbs responded perfectly. I then sync'd the carbs and am now at the point where I will need to cut coils off of the diaphragm, shim the needle, and re-jet. The bike starts, and idle's perfectly, but it has the infamous bog when you crack the throttle. (I expected this...)
Here is where I am looking for a little advice. I plan on cutting 3 coils from each spring, as I have read that this seems to be the magic number. I also plan on using a 130 main jet if needed. (currently I have 125's)
Should I shim the needle with a small washer and then cut the coils?, or should I do them both at the same time? Would you suggest 130, or 135 jets for a stock bike with only Emgo pods and no exhaust modifications?
Thanks for any assistance. It's appreciated.
Oh, ya one more thing. I like the look of the stock bike, so I too the original air box, gutted it, cut the sides and made them mount in the factory location. With the pods sitting in the hollowed out box, this thing has a wicked sound when you crack the throttle. heh, this little rocket is fun...
