So I have been fixing this bike up all winter since I bought it in the fall and I noticed the tach cable was broken before I bought it so I replaced it this spring. It immediately started making a whirring noise. I figured it was the age of the tach and dutifully ignored it. It seems to have gotten louder in the 100 miles I've had the new cable on but just today it started jumping around. Here is the link to the video (http://youtu.be/bpDODOQ8OtA). My questions are many but let's start with is this a normal sound for the tach to be making?

Ok so if the tach should not be making that noise then is there a fix or should it be replaced?

Was the replacement cable new or used, just the inner cable or the whole assembly (inside and outside parts), did you lube the cable good? I would check the cable, sounds like it might be frayed. And, hopefully not, it could be the tach giving up on life.

The cable was brand new. It was the whole assembly. I was told it didn't need lubrication so I didn't lubricate it. If I do need to lubricate it what should I use? It doesn't make the noise when the tach end is unplugged though. I think it's the tach, it was whacked before I bought it so I'm not against replacing it there are some on eBay. Can you still buy a factory one? Are the after market ones any good?

You tach is shot by the sounds of it.The aftermarket ones are ok.But they are electric & you could do away with the clutch cable.Being as you already have a new cable someone here may have a tach to sell you.The 750 Vulcan is the same tach also.

Ok so I ordered a used tach on eBay that was tested. Does the tach cable need lubrication? If so with what?

Oh sorry.I thought you said it was new.You can lube it with any light oil.I like to flush with WD-40 & sue a spray chain lube.Sprays thin & than gels to stay in place & not collect dust & dirt.

The cable is new but I just bit the bullet and bought a used tachometer on eBay. It would appear that the new cable I put in has something libricating it now so I guess I'm not really worried about it.
