I finally got around to taking off the stock mufflers, and I didnt realize these bikes would be so loud. The right muffler had a hole in the side, and it made the bike sound really strange.
The bike ran fine for a few days, although there was some hesitation when starting to go, and would take a bit before the rpms would jump up, but once it did I would go flying.
Last night a buddy came by so we could ride, made it about a mile from my house and then when we took off from a light the bike died. Was able to get it restarted, but off the choke it didnt want to stay running, and if I gave it gas it would die. Found the push throttle cable loose, so i put it back where it belonged and it ran fine to get me back home to tighten it. Started right up and we went a different direction to get some fuel. Leaving the pump I had the same issue. Would start and run on choke, but not without the choke and would die if I gave it throttle. Was able to push start it once, but then the battery was almost dead. Ended up pushing it home.
How bad of a rejet do I need, or is something else going on?

Have you checked to see if you don't have an air leak somewhere between the carbs and the airbox or between the carbs and cylinder? Spray some carb cleaner around the carbs, between the carb and the rubber boot at the airbox and between the carb and the rubber boot at the cylinder. Do this while the motor is running. Did you pull the carbs off to clean them? If so, did you clean all those tiny holes? If there is a blockage, even a small one, it will affect the way it runs. What about the diaphragms at the top of the carbs. Pull on them and look for small, I mean teeny tiny pin holes, they can make a big difference also. I had a honda that had a tiny hole in one of the diaphragms and it only ran with the choke on. Drove it 5 miles to the mechanic like that because I missed the pin hole when I rebuilt the carbs. 70$ lesson on my part. Did you adjust or readjust the air/fuel mix screw?

I havent had to do anything to the carbs. Bike ran fine when I got it, but it had a hole in the side of the right side muffler, so it sounded terrible. I removed them and it still started right up, just had a bit of lag when I would hit the throttle, but only when I went wide open from a low speed. I'll hook it up to another battery soon to see if I can get it to fire again, but I'm starting to think i might have roasted the spark plugs.
It's on the books to be gone through this winter, just have other projects that take priority.

Yeah, I'm still thinking the slide diaphragms. Check float bowl level and check the float itself, do you hear any liquid moving when you shake it? It really sounds like an air/fuel issue to me. But, I'm behind a laptop and can't see or hear it.
The moderators on this site must be busy, those guys are great and can usually ( almost 99% of the time ) diagnoise an issue just from reading a real good description of the problem.

Almost all the time if it only runs with the choke on you have a plugged idle passages....You can try some SeaFoam...It may save you removing the carbs.

Sorry I havent been very active on this page or thread lately. Got a lot going on at work and I'm almost never home. I'll try to get the carbs pulled off and check them out soon, also in the market for a battery tender. Anybody know of one that has multiple leads for several bikes?

Just bought a 85 454 Ltd it was running but was spitting fuel out the car so I took it apart and cleaned it now it won’t start it’s getting fuel to the bowl of the carb and if I put my hand over the carb it pulled fuel from the bowl but won’t stay running any ideas
