Are u talking about the crankcase breather? If so, they can be found at a lot of auto supply stores, and the hose size is approx 5/8th inch. The carb filters are 54 mm.

How does your bike run? The filters on the bike I just picked up arent in great shape and I was thinking about just ditching the airbox, but I've heard some bikes just never run right with pods.

you have to re-jet the carbs according to what mods you do for it to run right

Not absolutly true! I will repeat myself for about the thousandth time - I did the airfilter mod 5 or so years ago, ran all types of exhaust, and did NOTHING to the carbs, except adjust them. The bike ran just fine.

right you are Eagle, sorry about that. but aren't you running a 500 EX motor? perhaps there is some subtle difference between the 500 EX carbs and the 454 LTD carbs? or i could be completely wrong and often i am. lol

I am now, but that was back when I first got my 454 - all stock. I later installed the 500, using the 454 stock carbs, then I did have to re-jet, as the engine was not getting enough fuel. Then I got a set of 2004 Ninja carbs - much better.

It's about impossible to get an off the shelf 5/8 breather filter to stay attached to your breather. There is so little surface area for the hose clamp to bind to, that you've really got to mess with it.
I took my auto-parts store filter, took the rubber off, and then took the stock hose that connects to the breather, cut it, and jammed the filter on there.

Chopper, the 454 carbs are 34 CFM, the Late Ninja carbs are 37 CFM, not a lot, I know, but does make a difference. Couse, I must tell u that I'm running 150 jets, due to the competition cams that are there, too.

Eagle, your the man!! thanks so much for the info. looks like the '04 ninja carbs give almost 9% increase in CFM. wich means you could in theory add more fuel via larger jets and have more power. and thats always cool. lol. i have been watching for ex500r cams on evilbay but no luck yet. i wonder if you could order them from Comp Cams? what model year grouping does the '04 ninja carbs fall into? i mean what other year carbs are the same?

'02 up, the later the better, and the carbs for the 500R might even be better than the regular 500, since the R indicates the race version.

You won't find them from "Comp Cams" the cam company- These are a factory "race cam." The term "competition cam" is an older term (not saying you are old, my young friend Eagle!!! ;D) used to describe a hotter cam, usually offered by the factory. In some areas of the country they call them "3/4 race" or some other similar term. Remember that if you want to bring more fuel and air in, you'll need to get more exhaust out. If the bike can't breathe through the exhaust, it won't want the fatter jet.

U are too callin me old Andrew! ;D One of these days, u will get urs!!LOL!! But, yeah, ur info is correct. The exhaust I'm running now are older model stock hardly mufflers, baffles not drilled, and everything is fine. One time, I "built" a set of 2" straight drag pipes, no baffles.....ran great, but u could hear me commin up to 3 miles away! WAY TOO LOUD, so went to the hardly mufflers.

Eagle, you still got the 2" exhaust?

Yup - easy to make: #1. go get u some 2" & 1 3/4" exhaust pipe, and a couple of 1 3/4" to 2" adapter couplings, at a auto supply. U will need at least 4 feet of 2", and about 2 1/2 feet of 1 3/4", depending on how long u want the drag pipes, and where u connect them to the headers. #2. Cut your header pipes just in front of the crossover pipe - the 1 3/4 exhaust pipe can then be "driven" over the header pipes. measue and cut the 1 3/4 pipe as needed, and u can make a very slight upturn if ya want. #3. Now cut the 2" pipe to the length u want the drag pipes (I made them 24"), then weld the adapters on. This will allow the pipes to be slipped on the 1 3/4" headr pipe assembly. U can "slash cut" the back end of the drag pipes, if wanted (I did). Course, ya have to do this for both sides, making them the same on both sides. Make some clamps to hold the drag pipes about mid-point, then clamp them on to the header pipes. U want to clamp the drag pips about mid way, "cause the weight will tend to cause the header pipes to crack right near the engine. O, get u some good earplugs - "cause they are LOUD!!!!!!!!!!

thanks alot for the great explaination Eagle!! i may try this in the future, however i have already ordered 2 sets of mufflers to try out on the bike. if neither of these work i will be building your 2" drag pipes. i like loud!!! lol ;D
p.s. are the up bends necessary or a preference thing?

Very slight upbends are a preference. By the time 24 to 26 inches reach back, they are kinda low - the upbends would raise them up a tad.
