Hi everybody, I recently bought an '86 that needs a little work. The biggest problem is that the piston on the master cylinder is stuck all the way down, and the front brake is engaged. Also, the screws that hold down the reservoir lid are stuck; I've been hitting them with WD-40 every day, but no movement so far.
My questions are - will I probably have to rebuild the caliper? Is it practical to fix the master cylinder? If not, what are my options in terms of replacing it? I think I've read that any master cylinder made for a 7/8" handlebar and a single disc will work; is this true, and if so, do any particular ones work better on the 454 than others?

;D Your information is correct for the master cylinder. You may or may not have to re-build the caliper.

Thanks, I'm glad to know I can use different master cylinders; I haven't seen a single 454 one online anywhere. Now I just need to know which bikes have 7/8 handlebars and a single disc...I'll save that research for tomorrow (any recommendations are welcome)
Once I get the front brake up and running, replace the cables, and do some routine maintenance I'll be set!

I've looked areound and have found 2 master cylinders that meet the criteria - I just started wondering, though - is the fitting that goes between the cylinder and brake line a universal part, or does that have to be a specific size (I ask because the ones I've seen online usually don't come with that fitting)

One more thing, btw - what to do about the mirror? Will my right-side mirror fit most master cylinders, ro will i have to get new ones?

i think yamaha has backwards threads for the mirror on one side so be careful and do your research.

Hi Havinapretzle, Any of the older KZs have the 7/8ths in. handle bars. There are lots of masters cylinders listed on eBay. Look a the KZ 650, 750, 900 ,and1000 cc sites. also try the EN 450 listings, you'll find one in no time. Bob

my screws were stuck, too. took a Dremel and cut a large straight cut, then used a big screwdriver to pop it loose. got new screws at Advance. on the disc, open the bleed valve and take a sliver of wood and tap in to slot between brake pad and rotor. forces open if not all locked up. did that, too.
