I have a 1985 LTD 454. I recently scored a brand new gas cap on e-bay for $35 shipped. Does anyone know is I can remove the lock from my old cap and install it in my new cap? Thanks.

Is your new cap vented? It has to be vented. And whats the purpose of the key on the gas tank anyways? Do motorcyclists have problems with gas theft?

anything with fuel in it could be prone to theft, and i think he meant he bought a replacement cap for the stock tank.

If u notice, the key unlatches & latches the cap. If left unlatched, wind pressure would "suck" the fuel out of the top of the tank.

Without having it in my hand, I'm only guessing, but I think the cylinder is likely sealed into the cap unit when it's manufactured. So many modern components are not designed to be repaired, but to be replaced wholesale. But at last you must visit professional Locksmith for preparing gas cap lock cylinder again at affordable prices.
