I have a 86 and I`m not sure if the choke is working the way it is supposed to. When I pull down the lever it springs right back up, is it normal that you have to hold it on or is there something wrong with mine? could ya`ll let me know please

does the mechanism on the carbs move, it not, i would say you have something stuck, could be the cable. test this by disconnecting the cable from the carb and see if you can move the chokes by hand. but no, it should move freely and stay in the position you place it in.

already checked that, everything at the carbs working fine. i have to hold the choke lever in the position that i want it at because when i let go of the lever it springs back to the off position as if there is a spring attatched.

if you dis connect the cable, and run the choke lever, does it spring back? or does it occur in the mechanism? there should be no spring attached anywhere to my knowledge, mine does not work like that.

Something is not operating right in the choke linkage. It should stay were you put it,regardless,if the cable is connected or not.

maybe when I changed out the handlebars I messed something up at the bars.... I`m not sure when it started acting like this as I usually don`t need the choke to fire er up.

see i am thinking it is in the cable, isolating the cable from the choke will tell you more

perhaps your right, I will have to check into it more next weekend when I have the tank off to do a valve adjustment.

I thought the choke was srewy on my wifes bike until I adjusted the valves. Amazing how such a tiny clearance adjustment affects these bikes.

Did anyone ever figure this problem out? I have had my bike for 29 years and it just started doing this. I have the tank off now and everything is working perfectly. The bike runs perfectly, but when it is cold and I pull on the choke it goes right back off. So, to start it and warm it up, I have to sit there and hold the choke open. Is there really a screw inside the handlebar assembly? I don't want to take it apart if there isn't. Thanks in advance if anyone knows what is wrong.

I would disconnect the cable at the choke mechanism, if the problem goes away, it would be the cable sticking. Without lubing the cable every so often, they can rust, and get frayed.

i find when i put my tank back on without paying attention it will sometimes wedge the choke cable out of sorts and either get it stuck and unusable or very tight at least. Just double check when you put it back not that its not pinching it out of place.

Thanks guys. I put the tank back on and it works the same with the tank on or off. Pulls on very easily but slides right back off. I don't see anything in there that is interfering with it. It seems to be free but likes to be off. I may get me another choke cable if they are available and put that on.

I believe the leaver just gets worn at the bars & just won't stay in any position with holding it..There is no adjustment to tighten it.

Just received a new cable in the mail for $14 so figure it is worth a try for that amount. Will let you know if it helps.

The new cable did the trick. It still tends to drift just a little, but now the choke stays on until I turn it off. Thanks guys.
