My bike will idle but as I advance the gas it chokes out. I got it last year as a non running bike but it will start right up now and run great just won't race up past a few thousand rpm's Cleaned the tank new gas and vacuum line, filter. Everything was very clean , no trash in the bowls. When It toke the petcock apart to clean it. There wasn't a spring behind the vacuum shut off diafram. That tells me someone has taken it apart and lost the spring. Can I just replace the factory petcock with an aftermarker one that doesn't use the vacuum fuel shut off ? They are only about $25. That is cheaper than just a kit for the oem.

U can, but u run the possibility of flooding. Our carbs, and fuel system were designed to use the vacumn controlled petcock. If the floats are not set right, and/or the needle(s) do not seal properly, the carb(s) will flood, causing considerable problems. It does sound as tho the engine is possibly "starving" for fuel, due to the petcock not operating properly.

If you choose to use the "old style" petcock (no vacuum) you need to be in the habit of shutting the fuel off every time you shut the bike off,if you don't ,will have the problems Eagle stated. That's why the vacuum petcock was invented,so you don't have to worry about shutting the fuel off.

From whnt I found out, never use a petcock that isn't vacuum controled. She runs great now. Need a new battery. I don't like how close the fuel filter is. Fuel line is hard get on. Any ideas on a new routing ?

Any ideas on a new routing ? I have my filter down close to the bottom of the fuel line.It is routed in the stock location.I always disconnect the fuel line at the petcock, were it's easiest to access. This is the style of filter I use:
