Hello Everyone!
First, I would like to say that I'm am forever grateful to those who respond to my posts with questions -- this is a great forum!
So, I recently replaced the igniter on my 85 and that appears to have solved my hard starting and dead-stick (rolling quit) problem. But, in the meantime, I've been in the process of pulling things off the bike to get ready for my first valve adjustment (and in the meantime changing the starter clutch).
As I'm pulling stuff off the top of the motor, I'm checking this and that and I notice that the #1 cylinder coil is wired backwards -- that is, the yellow/red on ground and the GREEN on Positive. This is problem #1. Now, I pull out my service manual and notice that the BLACK wire is supposed to on ground for cylinder #1 and the green is supposed to be on ground for cylinder #2. The coil as it sat was wired Yellow/Red on positive and Black on ground.
So, a couple of questions -- I've had this bike for about 2 months so god only knows how long the bike has been wired that way. But, it ran fine before the hard-starting and dead stick issue that my new "old" igniter appears to have solved.
So, could this mis-wiring have torched the igniter in the first place?
Does the coil develop any kind of memory for the wiring if it is in place for several hundred (or thousands) of miles?
Does it matter which side (+ or -) the wires are attached to the coils?
Does it matter which side (cylinder 1 or 2) the "teams" (yellow/red + green) (yellow/red + black)
I'm weak on electrical -- I can run tests with a handmeter but god help me to understand what's actually going on.
At the end of the day, should I wire per the diagram or leave as is or what?
TA
