Hello. 1985 454. Bike had trouble starting when I bought it. Would start on third/fourth try and sounded like metal on metal grinding. The one and only time I've ridden it, it ran great! So i replaced the starter clutch (with help from this website!) which was cracked in half. I also replaced starter chain and flywheel sprocket, stator gasket and battery.
After replacing all that, the bike will turn over but will not start. I can hear the starter turning over the crank (sounds very smooth) and the bike is building compression (backfires after several attempts). I checked and have spark (also replaced both plugs). I can also smell fuel after cranking on it a few times. I drained the carb bowls (no debris or dirt present). What to do next?

Have you done anything at all to the fuel system other than inspect the bowls? If not, clogged jets etc. Have you pulled a plug after cranking to see if it's wet? If it isn't wet then vacuum/fuel lines kinked or clogged. Air filter/crank case restricted...might be a silly question but are you trying to start it with the choke on or off?
If none of the above; then the other main possibilities are: Timing, or the valves are too tight and need adjusting.

I did not touch the fuel system at all. Only electrical related thing to replacing the starter clutch was removing the stator and stator cover. I did check the plugs and after several start attempts, they were wet.
I just dont understand how it started and ran before replacing starter clutch and now it wont start.
The choke is on when attempting to start. I have also tried leaving it off.
What could have happened to change the timing? Thanks again!

Very unlikely that timing changed....unless cam chain breaks. Have you checked the valve adjustment?? The valves on these engines tighten up, closing the valves, to where the engine will not even start. It has been an on going "struggle" to get new 454 owners to understand this, but things are getting better.

I have not touched the valves or carb. I've never tackled that before and didnt want to cause more problems until I figure out what is currently wrong. Is there a sticky on valve adjustment? I'm willing to give it a try to at least rule it out.
Also, is there any way the stator could be causing a "no start" issue?

Since you didn't do any carb adjusting etc. and had hard starting previously, the valves are going to be the main culprit. You said you have spark; so we can rule out electrical system as the cause...unless your spark is an orange like color instead of a bluish white. The valves are like lungs they not only need to inhale but exhale too.
