Hi all, I have recently acquired an EN450 1986 as a non runner, I checked out the ignition and found I had a dead coil which I have now replaced but am still unable to get a spark on one side. If I switch the black coil wire from the other coil to the non sparking coil it then sparks so it would seem that I am not getting an output from the igniter. I have tested the continuity from the coil end to the igniter plug and it is fine, is there anything else I should check or is it almost certainly the igniter? any help will be appreciated. Thanks

If the coil wire from the coil to the plug is switched from the side that sparks to the side that doesn't, and the "bad" side now sparks, then it is most likely the plug wire. Put the plug wire from the "bad side" on the good side..if the good side now does not spark, that is confirmation tht the plug wire is bad.

Thanks for the reply, but getting a spark on the bad side by swapping the coil negative wires proves that the coil and plug lead are OK so it must be that the signal to spark is not being sent to the coil I think? I am not too good at explaining

Not speaking of the two wires on the coil...take the wire that goes from the coil to the spark plug from the side that is sparking, and put it on the side that is not sparking......that will let u know if the plug wire that was not sparking is bad. It could be that the plug wire is defective. Sometimes, the plug wire, or the end that screws on the wire, and plugs onto the spark plug gets defective, and sometimes, the plug itself is bad. Doing what I described eliminates the easier, less expensive fix. The object is to check and or fix the less expensive thing first, not spend money needlessly for something u may not need. If I read your first post, u did that, and u said it then sparked....or did I misunderstand? If that is what u said, and I quote " If I switch the black coil wire from the other coil to the non sparking coil it then sparks"....then all u need is a new spark plug wire, and perhaps the connector that plugs onto the spark plug. The thing that might be confusing both of us, is that your terms for parts there, and what they are called here are somewhat different.

Hi again, when I said the black wire I should have been clearer I meant the black on the primary winding's which comes from the igniter. I have now fitted a second hand igniter and it has cured the problem Thanks for your help.
