This is my first attempt of asking for help. I have a 85 454 and have been working on it for a year and a half. I have it running pretty good but having a problem with acceleration. When I take off it does pretty good but once I go to the 6th gear the throttle seems to be sluggish and if I try to faster it just hangs around 6000rpms Can you help?

It sounds like you may be starving for fuel or need a valve adjustment.Have the valves been adjusted? If so,have you tried a fuel treatment like SeaFoam.

I've used seafoam and other gas additives and I rin 94 octane gas. I've not done any work on engine such as valve adjustments

Blaine is right on with valve adjustment, if you didn't know the valves on this bike get tighter. Which means when out of adjustment it can act like a carburetor problem such as the mid range flat spot you're having when it should have the most pulling power.
It is bad for them to be tight, The only reason there needs to be a gap is because metal expands when it heats up. When the bike heats up and there's no gap where can it expand too and how can it release heat? Instead of expanding and cooling from the specified gap...it will start losing copious amounts of heat into the valve seat causing the valve to get hotter and hotter and burn up or melt the valve. The problem with too loose is the valve train takes a pretty good beating, but it's still better than being tight.
If you had done a valve adjustment I'd suggest something else, carburetor wise, but if your valves can't open and close like they should it's the same as having a carburetor problem except much worse, as a carburetor can either starve or flood an engine; not destroy it like the valves can.

Hey, Thanks for the info, I'll check in on adjusting the valves then go from there. Again thanks for the feedback

Adjust the valves. The 454 starts to get really interesting at 6 grand!

Well I adjusted the valves and still have bogging down. Recleaned the carbs adjusted the floats and still bogging at acceleration. I'm running air pods and seen someone said to wrap a rag around pod. I slipped socks over the pods and wow I think that might be the answer. I do have a little valve tapping noise, I hope it will stop sometime. I'm still working on and will keep updates...Thanks

Remove 3 coils from the top of the diaphram spring & you can eliminate any blocking of the pods.Less spring pressure means less vacuum to lift the slides.

If you adjusted the valves properly, dont worry about the noise...these engines are naturaly noisey....when they are not, thats an indication that the valves are tight, and need adjustment, which should be done every 4 to 5 thousand miles.

I'm back, Removed 3-coils out of the diaphram springs and readjusted the air mixture and was still bogging down during acceleration at about 3000 rpm. It was nice yesterday so I took it out for a ride and still bogs. When it was bogging I pulled the choke on and it cleared up and took off. I wrapped some duck tape around the pods and when I took off it hardly had any power so I removed about a half inch of the tape to open more of the filter and wow it took of screaming and and ran perfect no bogging and plenty of power. My question now is do I leave it alone or is there any things I can do to replace the duck tape? Would covering the pods with foam wrap or just leave alone?

You may need to go with a bigger Main jet.You are still running lean.I needed a #130.If your running good with the pods partly blocked off, your ok for now.I ran mine for a season with the filters partly blocked.but you really so rejet,so things are right.

At least its running good now it's been a long battle but I see hope Thanks for responding you've been a big help No problem.I'm relaying what worked for me after much trial & error. Some people can get away with no mods after putting on pods but that's not the norm.I think once you rejet you will be fine.As I said I ran the pods partly blocked for a season. But you won't get full power until you get them unblocked. You can think of it as trying to breath through your nose when working instead of being able to breath through your mouth also.Restricted!! Same thing.Your engine is one big air pump.
