Hi I had the 1986 454 since Dec, 2011 been running great till the petcock had to be rebuilt . The carbs were flooding so replaced the float seal set the bowl floats height to 17mm and gave a good cleaning. Put it together. The bike will not start. I have a good spark and the plugs are bone dry. There is gas in the bowls too. Any ideas? Thanks

By chance, was the bike getting a little hard to start when cold?? Sounds like perhaps fuel is not getting into the cylinders.

Yes it did get harder and harder to start when cold when I adjusted the valves about a 1000 mile ago I used the smaller # you could adjust them to.

When adjusting valves, use the higher value listed for the adjustment range. The reason is that when tightening the locknuts, it is very easy for the adjustment screw to turn just a bit, tightening the adjustment just a tiny bit, making the adjustment wrong.

Well I did check each valve after I adjusted each one for clearance.

which is good....however, by using the smaller number, the time between needed adjustments drops, and can cause the valves to " tighten up " quicker. Yes, the engine is noisier when using the higher number, but that is normal for this engine, tho to "newer" owners, and those not real familiar with this engine, the noise is "scary". I'm kinda leaning towards thinking the valves have tightened up, not opening enough to let proper fuel into the combustion chamber.
