Looks great.! Nice work. Do you 'rattlecan' or 'real paint' ? I use "Rattle can". But I use "SprayMax" 2x clear that will stand up to fuel spills. Here's a couple of pics with clear coat finished.

I would have personally went for a satin finish, but it is sweet!

Some paint stores will mix a special paint for you and then put it in an aerosol can for you. Granted, they are usually pricey..... My local body shop will do this for me. Sent from my LG-LG855 using ProBoards

Yep they will here too.But runs about $45.00 per can plus you gotta buy the whole can of harder & flatting agent. This will be high gloss once I wet sand & polish.I will post another pic with the finished results.

Not sure what the exchange rate is, but that is pretty high. All the bikes I've done; have been rattle-canned, and then I just run down to the body shop, and get a can of high quality clear for the tank. Already mixed, with the hardener, and even some with flatteners. They do if for me for $25 for just a can of regular clear, and $30 for the satin. They do have to be used within 45 mins to an hour, but where I paint is literally just 2 blocks down from the body shop. I wonder why they can't mix something like that for you....? If that price is for a paint store, might check with some of your local body shops. They might be able to give you a better deal. OR, they could even mix you up the paint, and seal it in the mixing bucket, then you could go to the paint store and have it canned....? Most body shops make their bread and butter on insurance jobs, which they can charge the insurance company for a gallon of clear, and only use a quart. Most of the time at body shops, clears will sit there and go bad on the shelf, and then they will have to pay to dispose of it. They would much rather sell it to someone, than pay to have it disposed of. And sometimes (for satin), it's just cheaper to take your tins off, do the bodywork yourself, paint them yourself; then take them to the body shop and have them shoot the satin. For a bike it would take MAYBE a half hour (no second coat for satin, no color sanding for satin). You pay simply for labor, ~$40 for a half hour, and maybe a few dollars for the paint.

Thanks for the input. That price is from the auto store.I never checked with the body shops to see if they could mix it for me.I'm in the middle of wet sanding the tank & I must say I really like the gloss I'm getting.

You do the striping yourself? The striping is actually a decal that looks like real paint.I'm very impressed with the quality. Here is the link: www.twistedchrome.com/

How is it blending with the clear? Kinda looked to me like in the picture with the fender, the graphic was raised quite a bit... Otherwise though, very nice on the paint.

Does look nice. Just wanted to throw in some knowledge I just learned. My plan this past weekend was to rattlecan the paint and primer then take it to a body shop for clear coat. Well I just got off the phone with a body shop to schedule taking it in. With the modern clear coats they will strip the rattlecan paint since the paint doesnt have a hardener. So body shop selection is critical to that method. Have to pic a cheap quality body shop or the paint will get messed up. After busting my bottom on this tank all weekend im a little upset to find out I may not be able to get a clearcoat to resist gas but not strip my paint.

Regular body shop "good" paint is much different than rattle can.....as you have found out. Very best way to paint the tank so no problems, is to have a good body shop painter paint it from the get-go. Probably run a couple hundred for paint and painting a single, solid color. Less if you have a friend that will do it as "side work".

You can order it on line or get it at most auto body supply stores. It has a harder & will resist fuel spills.

I thought about that. But the price they gave me at the body shop was too good to turn down. 150 to use the highend bondo and then paint the tank. They are using chrysler black which is almost a direct match to the original black. In the shade it looks black but cleaned and in the sun its a nice metalic.
Total the tank had 21 rust holes. I fixed them with jb weld after divoting them with a hammer and screwdriver. Then redid the Kreem liner. But the tank had 2 minor dents and then the repaired areas that they are smoothing out for me.
I figure to do it all myself would end up costing about 120. So for an extra 30 to have them do all the work with high end paints. I couldnt turn it down. Plus this shop is used to doing custom and exotic cars. They stay busy with self pays and barelly do insurance work. Which is a suprise for a body shop atleast around me.

Oh and the shop is across the street from my favorite bar. As in directly across the street so it gives me an excuse to stop in for a cold one and good food. Hahaha
