Just an FYI; I searched for "reserve lighting" in the forums and couldn't see any results so I thought I'd add this in case anyone's curious.
I'm doing a 100% teardown/inspection/TLC/rebuild of an 89 454. Today on the rear fender's electrical unit holder I found a black box called RESERVE LIGHTING DEVICE, made by (looks like) Koito, number 337-11722.
Part of my teardown is so I can learn every part of the bike and what it does; and I'd never heard of this reserve thing before and had no idea what it was for.
A simple Google search and I learned (if the searches were correct) that it senses whether one of the elements burns out in the headlight bulb; and if so, it automatically sends the lighting current to the other element.
That's so if one of the elements in the headlight bulb burns out on a dark night, we won't suddenly go into blackout mode while rounding a dark corner or something: it'll immediately switch to the other element to keep giving some headlight power.
But one post said that as soon as you either flip the hedlight switch to the other setting (high or low beam, whichever is opposite what it's on when the RESERVE system trips), or as soon as you turn the ignition switch off, the RESERVE system no longer works until you replace the light bulb with one that has two good elements. Sot it seems to be sort of a "one chance is all you get" system.
Anyone know more about this system; or about other "hidden" specialty systems the bike has that we might not be aware of?
I had one Chinese dual-sport bike that had an antilock rear brake system; couldn't believe it because I only paid $400 brand new for the bike; fancy system for a cheap bike.
I thought it was interesting to find this RESERVE info. Never would have thought of it if I hadn't torn the parts off and looked at that box and wondered what the heck it was.
