Hey everyone, pretty new to all this but loving all the info I got so far. Got a 86 454 that was running ok.. Had 2 year old gas setting in it so we cleaned that out. Took the carbs off and cleaned them and replaced them. Now shes running really rough, RPM all over the place, stalls when I put it in gear. I ve been reading that maybe we need to readjust the piolt jet screw but PLEASE tell me theres an easier way to do that besides taking the whole carb off again opening it, moving the screw and replacing it to see if it work....
when we got it it woulndt start cold( needed ether in the air intake to get her going) thought a goo d cleaning would fix her up.. but not os much.. so any suggestion?

If there is no metal plugs over the screws you can adjust them no problem.Just turn slowly out (rich) or in (lean) to get the smoothest & fastest idle.If the plugs are still over the screws you can pierce them with a sheet metal screw to remove them.

Thanks for the reply.. I was so hoping there was a magical way that didnt involve me cussing and yelling at it to get the carms off and back on again.. SIGH.. I have a final tomorrow evening after work but then I should have time to wrestle with it.. again.. its the air filter boots that was the biggest PITA..

Sorry,I wasn't clear. You can remove the plugs without removing the carbs.

OHOHOHOHOH You have no idea how happy that just made me.. Can i bother you to be a little more specific on how I would do this? Just need something small & sharp to pierce the plug. A screw works well because once you pierce the plug than you have something to get a grip on to pull the plug out.On another note..... These engines need a valve adjustment every 7500 miles.

TY I will give that a shot tonight. As of this Am i went out and she started rigth up. COLD I was excited and shifted into gear. She didnt sound too bad but I didnt let it warm all the way up either.
It only has 8k miles on it right now, but I was reading abotu adjusting the valves. I may have to tackel that next.

TY tons, I took them off one more time( not totally tho, used a drill and bit and removed the plug. Adjusted them both so they were in the same position reapplied and found that the hose to my air valve was kinked totally on one side. Going out tomorrow to get longer hose so that I can move it to a nicer location. Thinking a lack of air to half my engine just may be part of my problem.. Trying to find a thread that will explain how to test the valve to make sure its working properly....
