My dad got this bike for a $100 and gave it to me. He knows I like to work on things. Its my fist bike project I have worked on. Played around with cars and have ridden for years but have not owned a bike for some time. I told my wife that if I wanted to get a bike I would have to build it myself to be happy with it, so here is the start of one. Will upload pics when the app lets me.

Hmm. Cant seem to upload any pics from app. But I have the bike completely disassembled, I sandblasted most of bike and painted black with red highlights. Will work on pics as soon as I can.

The bike is looking good so far man. If you end up with parts your not gonna use the guys on the forum may be interested in them. I'm sure someone would be interested in the engine guard you have if you don't use it. They are very rare and hard to find. I was lucky after 1 1/2 year of searching to find one brand new. I would be interested in the rear fender if you don't use it. Keep us posted on the progress and if your interested in selling any parts you do not use. Sent using Pro boards Mobile App ;D ;D

Sure thing, as soon as I figure out what I don't need, I'll post it. Got the motor in, swing arm, and some other little things on today. I am already sitting on it imaging the wind in my hair...... well what would be hair.

Its definately coming together nice. I love the look of the black on our bikes. Eventually I would love to do a complete teardown of my bike and re-paint the entire thing. I don't have the painting experience or the room to do it so not sure if that will happen or not. Sent using Pro boards Mobile App ;D ;D

Just curious, how did you paint the engine and covers? did you use the 2 part epoxy clear coat on them?

Haven't had time to work on bike for awhile. Kids and work, you know how it goes. Well I am not a pro at all and dont know how to use automotive paint, so talk to someone who dose and they said some spay paint would be fine for what I am doing. I am using kryalon on parts and a high temp paint on motor parts. I know its not the way to do it but thats what I have to work with so thats what I am using.

I understand Brian, I am not a pro in the aspect either. The 2 part epoxy coating I was refering to is a 2 part clear coat. It comes in a spray can with a red prong in the bottom. When you are ready to paint with it you push the cap into the bottom forcing the prong into the can. This releases the hardener into the paint. Its similiar to the automotive finish as it gets hardened. I can post a link for you to the site I got mine from if you want. Sent using Pro boards Mobile App

The rattle can paint and gasoline do not mix....the gas will eat the paint...that is why the epoxy clearcoat is needed...gas does not effect it as easy, if at all.

The epoxy clear coat is good. I put it on my tank when I rattle can painted it 2 years ago. Right after I painted it the petcock gasket started leaking. I took the tank off and tipped it so the petcock didn't have any gas over it. Well from the tank sitting at the angle for a week, the gas leaked out of the gas cap. Ate the epoxy, paint and primer off down to bare metal! I haven't fixed that yet. Figured it isn't on the top of my fix list at the moment. The bike is still road worthy, just not cosmetically smooth. I'm gonna have the tank redone next year.

So, I gather that the epoxy paint/clearcoat is not impervious to gas either.

So, I gather that the epoxy paint/clearcoat is not impervious to gas either. It is once it is cured. That being said there is a difference in spilling gas on it & cleaning it up immediately & gas sitting on it for a long period. This is my tank with Krylon & SprayMax 2x clear.

Once it's cured you can spill gas on it and wipe it clean. That wasn't the case for me. I had the tank tipped and gas dripped over the tank for a week. That wsn't a little spill and wipe up. lol

As most have heard, "its not what you know, but who you know." Luckily I know an auto body painter. So going to go the right way for the tank. That way I don't have to worry about it.

Yeah Brian, I am planning on having my tank done professionally next year. Then I won't have to worry about the little drips either.

By the way your tank looks bad Donkey! I may send you my tank LOL. I dont know if I will even use my tank b/c it has rust inside and had to drill out the cap as I did not have key for it. So may look for one the will fit the backbone and be somewhat good looking. Thats always important.

That's a pretty nice tank Blaine. looks like it has a few dings in it but otherwise in decent shape. I may redo my tank myself again. I stripped the tank the first time with a dye-grinder and sanding pads. It came out perfect but couldn't do the bottom of the tank with it. This time I am going to see if I can borrow my cousin's small sand blaster to do the bottom of the tank. Do you think you can bake the clear coat on for a harder finish? I used the same 2 part epoxy clear coat that you did. I was curious if baking it would harden the finish more. I have a wood stove in my house and was also thinking putting the tank near that for a week or so. Thought maybe I could make a rack of some sort to keep the tank about 1ft from the stove. just keep rotating it every couple hours. Do you think that would work? This is of course after it has dried for a full 24hr period.

So, feeling a little stupid. I put the swing arm in upside down. Was trying to make the suspension bars for the hard tail in and was wondering why it was off to one side and about to bend the dars to make it work when I looked a little bit and saw in my excitement to get it together a few days ago I was not thinking to what side was up. So fixed it and a mock up of the bars are in. I dont know if this is what I want to use tho. Other then that im going to try to get wiring in today.

Unfortunately it has come to a hult, and as always its because of $$ but have cut off foot peg mounts to make way for a new bracket and round bar for new pegs. Pics to come as soon as progression occurs.

Ok, I am looking at tire sizes. And I dont want bigger, I want a sick looking bobber size. So if anyone has ideas, knowledge, or even some two cents, I'm all ears. I see stock is rear 140/90-15 and front is 100/90-19. So thinking a 100/85-15 rear and 95/80-19 front. Im dropping the bike a few inches so want a good look. Have not looked anything up as of yet. But want to see your guys thoughts.

Why are you wanting such narrow tires, especially on the rear???
