Is the temp gauge in the red? Or is it just at the second line just before red?? As long as it's not getting in the red, you will be fine.
When it gets over 80 degrees F here, my bike NEVER gets below half on the temp gauge. @ 85, it's about 3/4, and on our 100+ degree days, it's pretty much pegged at the line just below red.
Your rad COULD be plugged up... Try taking it off, plug the bottom port, fill it with CLR, then lay it flat on the ground (ports facing up) for about 30-45 mins. If that doesn't help any, you'll need stronger chemicals, or take it to a rad shop and have them rebuild it.

Ok I went up to the store which is 3/10th of mile from my house n bought some clr n let it sit in my radiator off my bike laying down flat for 50 mins why I dis other stuff to the bike clean it up some more n I put it all back together should seen all the black n brown junk came out of the radiator n before i would ride it just up the road about 2 miles and it would get to last white line before the red line and I drove about 5 miles tonight and it got up to bout 3/4 temp and I came back and u couldn't hear water bubbling like before I am going take it to work tomorrow n after I get home I might give it one more good cleaning... I am happy with this page they taught me a lot getting my temp gauge back down cut it from cutting in and out when I would take off and no more back firing I am happy... I didn't have spend much extra money I did not have thank you all for helping this white redneck out in southern Ohio lol

Another cleaning and flush would not hurt a bit, 25 years will leave a lot of rust and lime in your radiator; and as expensive as they are, it's always better to save one with as little $$ as possible. Good luck on the rest of the project!

You could try some prestone flash fush from O'reilys just leave it in the radiator for about six to seven days (riding day's)
