Having stripped everything off the frame (except races which I don't have a tool for yet), I took a look at my ignition switch assembly. Peering into where the wires enter the assembly I thought I could see fraying wires (and possibly, under the grime, that it was a white wire).
Figuring I had little to lose, I had a go at getting the switch apart. A bit of grinding to remove a stripped screw got the the mechanical, key switch away from the electrical switch assembly and I then managed to get that open to find an obviously frayed connection. Typically, I then took it a step too far and the various mechanical bits underneath went "ping" and I didn't know how it went back together.
These are the bits that fell out of their homes...
I think they might go like this:
I gave it a squirt of WD-40 and scrubbed it clean(ish) to get a better look and the connection looks like this:
It should be fairly straightforward to break that soldered connection and re-solder it with a freshly stripped bit of the white wire there. If I've got the mechanical switch bits in their right places it will all go back together reasonably easily and I might even have a working ignition again. I just kind of wish I hadn't poked in that far. I managed to avoid breaking the plastic tabs, and I don't mind gluing it anyway. The copper contacts probably need a bit of wire wool on them anyway, though so it's not all bad, just wish the various springs and that ball-bearing hadn't dislodged in the process.
eaglerider, do you recall how those bits go back together? I seem to remember you implying you'd pulled a switch to bits at some point...
