Hey guys I just got a quick question about the starter. when i got the bike the starter cranked really slow and eventually stopped working. i checked it out and the battery ended up being bad. I was leaking so i got a new one. The bike worked fine but now its happening again. when i hit the starter button all i hear is clicking from the solenoid. Any ideas on what it could be?

Did you charge the battery over night before you put it into service? If not it can go bad quickly.

yeah left it all night on the charger and ran decent meaning it cranked over but slowly for about two days before this happened

Check to make sure all connections and battery and ground connections are good, and jump start the bike from another battery (do not have the vehicle that u are jumping from running!) when u get it started, with a volt meter, check to see if your bike charging system is charging properly. Perhaps your charging system has developed a problem and not charging the battery. The slow starter does sound as if you might have a starter that is going bad, and need rebuilt.

Thanks for all the info fellas. well i jumped the battery and got nothing. just sparks from the terminals. I think the starter went bad. would buying a rebuild kit be sufficient or do i need a whole new starter?

This may have already been answered elsewhere, but anyone know where a cheap rebuild kit can be picked up for our Starters?

If you have the money there are higher quality kits out there, just google it.

Although this may not be the case, have tried bypassing the solenoid? If it still cranks slow, pull the starter, bench test it, and based on the results you should know if you need to rebuild/replace the starter. If bypassing the solenoid makes the starter spin normally, replace the solenoid. I've had 4 bikes in which the solenoid would just click, in all four cases testing found the solenoid to be worn out/broken. Replacing it fixed the problem all 4 times. Could just be coincidence, but at least all the testing can be done without spending any money. Hope this helps.

You can ditch the relay and just run the solenoid if that thing is bad. The black w/white stripe runs to the controls and the red and yellow wire from the solenoid can go to ground or any black and yellow wire.

Thanks for all the info fellas. so i jumped the starter directly from the battery and i got nothing so i was guessing the starter was bad. I took it out and tested it again and nothing happened. i decided to buy a rebuild kit considering it was only 20 opposed to a used starter that are around 90 bucks. when i opened up the starter motor a mix of black powder, water and grease came out. I looked at the brushes and they were gone. cleaned everything up and changed everything out, i hooked it up to test battery i had and it spun but really slowly. ohh well. i hooked it up to the bike and voila. it was like new. started right up it no longer sounded slow or struggled to start.

My starter is cranking slowly, even with a new battery. Looks like it is time to rebuild the starter. My Clymer manual is telling me I have to remove the carbs to get the starter out. Is it really necessary to pull the carbs? It looks like it will come out to me.

You are looking at the top part of the starter, there is more that you don't see....also, you have to pull the stator cover.
