Hey, i'm new to the boards and i just got my 1985 up and running. I just have 1 real quick question that i'm having a bit of trouble finding an answer to, and don' want to wreck the bike over.
When the bikes are up to running temp, where should the temperature gauge be sitting? I took a quick ride across town from where i was getting it running and it was sitting a little above half. Is this normal?
Thanks! Any help is helpful!

Absolutely normal. As long as the needle isn't in the red, you're good. The line just below the red, is the top end of the normal range. It's not uncommon for the needle to be at 3/4 on an 80+ degree day.

Half to 3/4 reading is pretty typical...

So I have had 2 motors in my '86 so I thought I would share. The original motor never went past 1/2. This one however, sits at about 3/4 regardless of temp. Never seems to go any further. I just thought it is was noteworthy that 2 motors from the same year in the same bike were so different!
ETA: Been watching it in the colder weather (40-60) and it drops pretty low, but idling in traffic jumps back up to just under 3/4.

Difference in the temp sending unit, most likely. 1/2 to 3/4 needle position on temp gauge is normal.
