Tried to start bike after installing carbs and didn't get a fuel flow from petcok while trying to start. Used a vacuum pump on petcok and got fuel flow. Both diaphrams are t-ed together going to petcok. Blew and sucked on t and no resistance. Are valves bad in diaphrams are could somethingelse inside be bad are stuck. Carbs have been cleaned and new kits installed. Bike didn't realy start and if you leave vacuum on petcok while not turning bike over gas will come out one carb and shortly after out the otherone. I think this is normal.Take vacuum off petcok and gas will stop. Are floats set wright? Have not installed a vacuum gauge on t to diaphrams yet to check for vacuum.

Gas should not come out the carbs. It sounds like your floats are set too high or sticking. You will not get full vacuum to the petcock till the bike starts, but you should get enough for fuel flo.

I plan on removing bowls and check to see if floats are at 7 mm tonight. I'll also look at diaphrams while carbs are off. Seems to me there should be some resistance either when you blow or suck on hose connected to diapham. If I sound lost I'm a newbee to a 454. Thanks

Hello I removed my vacume tube from petcok and took apart the petcok where the vacume tube connects there was a brass end so i unscrewed that first and found it was corroded and when I try blow into it, it was blocked ! so that did not help me get any gas, when i went for a ride the bike would start and as i went along the road and try to accelerate it would die ! so now i know why it did this , I was getting no compression from vacume tube to open petcok diafram to allow gas to flow ,,, now its fixed and i put on a glass filter so i can see the gas flow ! bike does not die any more and halls Donkey, also I had a simular problem with gas flowing out if carbs and when i opened them I found this , where you float needle is I had bits of rubber stuck in that! this Stops the needle from closing and allowing the gas to run out! take your time with this and look inside there you may have same problem, also the float needle has a rubber end this can have gotten hard with age and will not seal and may need replaced I may not be saying the right names for each part but I think you get the idea the floats are very easy to work with.

I also put a rebuild kit in for my petcok the cost was around $30 for this and I also found my rubber to be hard inside my petcok this helped my gas flow very much !

Other problems that may stop your gas flow is the vacuum tube was also hard and did not seal to the connection this is common on older bikes. Rubber deterioration cracking and hardening. my vacuum tube was also bad, So I went to advanced auto, They sell hose and small tubing that you can use for the bike. The gas line I get was very good and worked perfect I think it was 1/4" but the vacuum line was not a great fit! I got small zip ties to put on and this helped seal the hose on each end and worked out fine but later I will look for more vacuum hose that has a good fit. Another thing to remember is that when your hoses break down the small piece of rubber can cause so many problems gas running out of carbs and not letting the bike start because there may be small piece of rubber blocking the idle jet. I have had all these problems because my bike is one of the oldest models of the (454ltd AE 1 1985) My carbs are still not right, I got to still set my floats and check vacuum on diaphragms and adjust the idle jet. But I can get it started and runs until the lack of gas in floats mess me up lol Does anyone know if I can use the Vulcan 500 carbs on my bike ? I was think I need to change the idle jet to use them?
