Hi all, my son just bought a 1986 454 ltd. PO said it had sat for a year without running. Wiring to kill switch/start button has been hacked a little, everything else looks visibly ok. Start button does nothing, but can jump from battery to black wire that runs to start button and bike will turn over, just no fire to spark plugs. Ignition switch causes all lights to come on, etc. I'm sorry this is pretty vague, just need to know what to check. I'm not too good with electricals, but maybe someone can lead me in the right direction. Thanks!

Depends on how much the wiring has been chopped up, this wiring harness can be very complicated. Have you checked the fuses? The fuse box is the round, black plastic box next to the horn...it could be just a blown fuse. The chopped up wiring could be that the wires to the kill switch are screwed up, engageing the kill switch, killing power to the ignition system. The same thing can happen with s bad ignition switch, even tho u have power to the lighting system. Remember, there are three parts to the electrical system, lighting, ignition, and starting. I am like you, not really good on the electrical stuff.

I had a similar gremlin, went half insane finding it. The problem was a cracked battery terminal. Lights came on but as soon as I drew the required power to start there was a loud click then no lights at all. Battery test was great as the shops (I went to 3 different shops to test the battery) all clamped the tester low on the terminal, below the crack. Sure wiring harnesses are confusing. But make yourself a test lamp, 2 pieces of wire (thick) with a bulb in the middle. These test for the most minute ammounts of electrical resistance. Better than most multi meaters. Look them up on the net or buy one (not much) but there basic to make and will find the wires that are to fault, if any are? Good luck mate!

2 hours on YouTube will teach you all you need to know about using a multi meter, if thats a prob. 12 months ago I couldn't use one. do you have a manual? If not get one.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm gonna check out the fuses and ignition switch and go from there. Don't know if it matters but we don't have a key. The PO lost it, and rigged it to turn on with a screwdriver. I read about putting in an aftermarket ign switch, if anyone has any more info on that it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John
