Hello all I just bought a 86 454 ltd. I thought all I was going to have to do was replace the flywheel magnito, Turns out the guy I got it from had the carbs off, So for now I just need to know Do the carbs sit on a bracket? or are the just held there by the boots and the air box? also when I turn the flywheel by hand I hear a hiss coming behind the flywheel. I would think thats not good, a blown crank seal.

As long as the two carbs are together in their rack, they just get held in place by the boots. Are you sure your just not hearing compression when you turn the bike over??

I ve never worked on a bike. I've never heard a car hiss like that turning the crank. Once the flywheel puller comes in I will get all the shattered magnets outta the starter chain and rent a compression tester, do any of you know if a regular 18mm socket will take the plugs out or do I need a plug socket. And any idea what the compression should be, I got a service manual coming. but it may take awhile crossing an ocean. Thanks for the carb help I may need some help figuring how to mount the choke cable to the carb I got the other figured out I think. thanks guys. These old bikes look good with the high tank, can't wait to get her running

Thanks Blaine, for the insight. after getting the flywheel off, I seen small oval slots behind it, Not sure why they are there, guess to give the starter chain a lil lube maybe. I got the bike started and rode it a lil, then the woodruff key snapped. trial and error, I got this bike more cause I wanted to learn about them and work on one, but if it wasn't for this forum I would have already put a bullet in it.
