Question. When riding my bike for longer than 15 minutes I notice the temp gauge rises past 3/4 almost to hot. I never see smoke or smell any kind of burning. I just flushed the radiator and put new coolant in it. It could be the thermostat I guess or the temp sending unit? Is there any way to check either one to see if they are OK before replacing? And, how do u know if the temp gauge is accurate or not?

Not sure. Haven't looked at it while riding. Will it get hot enough to kick the fan on while idling in the yard or do I need to be riding?

Sent from my Moto X I recently replaced my fan temp switch (it's screwed in on the bottom of your radiator) and the fan doesn't kick on until above 3/4 on the gauge. Also, make sure the radiator is properly grounded to the frame or it will never turn on. Sent from my One using proboards

And, how do u know if the temp gauge is accurate or not? Sent from my Moto X If the fan comes on, and the cooling system has been thoroughly flushed, if the gauge gets a bit high, that's normal. It'll go up in traffic, and on hot days, 3/4 to 7/8 sometimes even, but as long as you're not IN the RED range, you should be good. If the coolant in your overflow bottle is boiling, and the temp gauge is low, that's obviously a problem. If it gets hot in traffic, and then doesn't cool once you take off, that's a problem too. No boiling coolant in the bottle, no temp in the red range, and it doesn't smell hot, you're good to go. My bike is in top notch running condition, and even mine gets a lil warm from time to time. Don't worry about that temp gauge until it's IN the red.

Went riding today. Never saw the fan kick on but the temp gauge stayed around midway to a little past half. Does the temp sending unit control when that fan kicks on? Haven't changed the sending unit or the thermostat yet but I plan on doing it. Not sure how to check the fan either to see if its good or not. Any ideas?

Sent from my Moto X You don't need to replace anything. Everything you just described is normal. Yes, the sending unit controls the fan, but it usually won't kick on until about 3/4 of the temp guage. Let the bike just sit and idle and it will eventually get up to 3/4 temp and the fan should kick on. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S3 using the ProBoards Mobile App

Sent from my Moto X Like Zekk said, everything seems to be fine. However, if you want to check if the fan works, disconnect the wire to your temp switch, turn the key to the on position, and touch the end of the wire to a spot on the frame. The fan should come on. If it doesn't, then it's either the relay (under the seat), or your radiator isn't grounded. Sent from my One using Tapatalk

Thanks for the info. I'll check the fan to make sure its working at least. One other thing. Where is the temp sending unit located? Reason I ask is because right under my radiator close to the thermostat housing where the main wiring harness runs, I have a wire that's coming out of the harness but its just sitting there. Not plugged to any thing. It does have a blade terminal on it like it should plug to something but nothing is there to plug it to.

OK thanks a lot for all the help. I'm a newbie to this site and just started riding about 2 weeks ago so I'm trying to learn all I can about it.

That wire won't reach though. I do know that. Coming out of the harness, that wire is maybe 2 inches long with the connector on the end. It won't reach that far. I looked and looked but there is nothing there to plug it to. I'm stumped

So there should be no extra wire coming out of that harness maybe for testing Purposes? Just wondering if it is for the temp sensor, where is the temp sensor?? There is nothing even in that vicinity where that wire is. I've replaced them on cars so I know what they look like but there is nothing there. I wonder if a picture would help?

Thank u so much. That's not good at all. From the looks of it then, there is a bolt there instead of the temp unit. If that's true, how is the temp gauge even working?

Yep. Same place. Mine has a bolt in it instead of the temp unit. Guess the previous owner did that! So, how is the temp gauge working without the sending unit because mine is moving up and down?

OK but how did they wire it if the temp sensor wire is just hanging there? Straight to the temp gauge maybe?

Sent from my Moto X You'll have to open up the instrument cluster, find the wire going to the temp gauge, and trace it to where they connected it. That's what I would do. Ok. Good news and bad. The temp sending unit is hooked up!! That wire is for the fan switch at the bottom of the radiator. The terminal is broke off. Guess that's why I've never seen the fan run but I did try turning the key on, unplugging the temp sensor and grounding it to the frame like somebody said on here earlier. Fan still did not come on. Is that because that fan switch is broke. The harness for power to the fan is still plugged up.

Sent from my Moto X So the wire I was talking about was the wire running to your fan switch at the bottom of the radiator. Touch that to the frame and the fan should come on. Looks like you're going to have to buy a fan temp switch. They come up on ebay from time to time, but I've never seen an aftermarket one.

OK. So turn key to on and take fan switch wire and touch it to frame!! I will check that. I was trying to touch temp sensor wire to frame. Do I leave temp sensor plugged up or does it matter? If I touch fan switch wire to frame and fan does not come on, then its a bad fan right? Or could it be something else?

If the fan doesn't come on, it's either a bad ground from the radiator to the frame, the fan relay, or the fan itself. Sent from my One using Tapatalk

Gotcha. I already checked the ground on the radiator. Looks good to me. Where is the fan relay at and what does it say on it or look like just in case I have to replace it? Wouldn't wanna pull a different relay on accident and replace something that's already good!! Once again, thank u so much for ur help!!
