My Bike....... 1986 EN450, 17,000 miles Late last fall, I took the float charger off my bike, and installed a battery tender. Was hooking the charger up on the lawn mower, when I heard the clamp pop off the bike battery. I looked around to see sparks flying. By the time I got back to it, the positive clamp had a spot that was glowing, where it had shorted to the battery box. It had also burned the insulation off of the ground wire that runs from the neg battery post to the battery box bolt. The key was off at the time. I pulled the battery out, and left it out for the winter. I started with a valve adjustment this season. When I got it back together, I discovered it had no spark. The coils check good. The pick up coils check in specs, and I can see some a/c voltage from the pick up coils when turning the engine with ratchet. The Clyner manual and the Haynes I downloaded both point to the igniter. Are they that sensitive, that the short could have fried it? Is it worth it to take the igniter to a shop for testing? Getting power to the igniter. Marked all the wires to the coils before removal. I did pull the left side cover and inspected the pick up coils and wiring, all looked/tested good. Any help would be welcomed Rick

Sorry to say.....likely fried it....just as trying to jump start the 454 from a running vehicle can fry stuff.

I can't find any other cause for no spark, but I would feel a lot better about replacing it if I knew it was dead. Has anyone done a conversion to any other igniter that is more plentiful/cheaper ?

Okay; been doing some reading on other forums. I have a question. If the clutch or kickstand wires were shorted or open, would the result be no spark, or no crank? (the clutch and kick stand switches were disabled by a previous owner)

Went out and checked tonight, and I have spark on both cylinders!!! maybe I can get this thing going. Was seriously considering parting it out.

Update; After baking the plugs in the bbq grill 2 or three times, I got it running !!! Ran like total crap for a while, but after running it with the choke on for a while, it was able to idle on it's own. I will finish putting it back together, and make a few laps around the yard tomorrow
