So after saying I was going to clean the carb's for a couple years now, I finally got to it. Service manual in hand, I drilled out the pilot screw cap, counted the turns, backed it out. With the carb body stripped down, I proceed to hit the ports with some carb cleaner and blow them out with compressed air. Then move on to the bowls, which surprisingly had hardly any varnish but a fair amount of loose debris. One was totally dry too... but back to the point. As I'm blowing out the drain port on the bowl, I see a little brass washer in my gunk pan. If it didn't come from the bowl, then it had to come from the carb body (unless it was from another job, which is VERY unlikely).
The washer is 5 mm OD, 3 mm ID, and .53mm thickness.
I go back to the parts schematic (which doesn't have any labels in the book BTW) and it's apparent there is supposed to be a washer and an O-ring after the spring on the pilot screw. I looked for them when I took the pilot screw out but couldn't see them and nothing tapped out. IF that's the part that blew out during the cleaning, I am still short an O-ring (unless it's lodged in there and won't come out) AND I don't know which side of the carb body it came off of... neither one has a brass washer intact. When I recorded the pilot screw turns to seat, I got 2 1/4 turns for one side, and 1 3/4 turns for the other side. That makes me think that one side had the washer and the other didn't. But it's really just speculation.
I'd reassemble it without the washer and see what it runs like, but then there's those stupid cover caps that I don't want to have to redrill again. I can order another washer online, but then I'm not sure about the o-rings, as well as how much setback to use (1/2 seems like it is probably 0.5 mm).
Can someone here whose done this procedure themselves point me in the right direction about where this washer goes and if its critical to have on both carb assemblies?
Thanks!
