I am finally getting the valves adjusted on my bike. I have read what seems like a million threads on the topic and I have everything removed but a few things happened in the process that I have questions about, and I need some clarification on others. Sorry for more questions on this since it seems to have been discussed ad nauseam, but I read a ton and its not clear.
1. A knock pin was either missing, or fell out when I removed the cover. I have rotated the engine and cant hear anything rattling, I have looked all down in there and cant see anything, and I did not hear anything hit the ground when I pulled the cover off (although I admit I was not paying the closest attention to those when I pulled it off). I plan to look further in the morning, but if its not there what should I put back in its place?
2. When removing the cover, I just moved the coolant tank out of the way but didnt remove it, but I decided to take it off later, and some of the residual coolant in the hose went into reservoir and mixed with the fluid in there. Is that going to be a problem?
3. Would like a clarification on the position of the cams when adjusting the valves. I have it positioned to TDC according to the manual and many posts here, but I have also read what eaglerider wrote about putting the cam lobe at 90 degrees from the adjusting screws so I am confused. Do all the valves get adjusted from the same TDC engine position? Does one whole side, exhaust and intake, get adjusted from the same position? If so they wont all be 90 degrees off the set screws. On the left side, the lobes are just a few degrees off each other, with the intake closer to 90 from the set screws than the exhaust, and the right side looks to be about 90 off from the left. Can someone clarify?
4. What torque should the lock nuts be set to? I think the exploded view in the manual said 18 ft-lbs, but I am not sure, and the torque thread on here does not list the valve lock nuts.
Thanks for reading and I hope someone has the answers.
