I bought my 89 about a week ago and It has been nothing but trouble. PO said that It needed a new battery and (maybe) a tune up. So I threw a new battery In and still nothing. I was getting spark, but no fuel. So Looking at the carbs, I saw gaps between the carbs themselves and the boots that connect to the cylinders. With about an hour of prying and persuading, I got the boots to make a nice connection. That seemed like it helped, although the bike will still not run for more than 15-20 seconds without dying. Obviously a little help from starting fluid helped, but without the constant spraying of it, the bike sputtered out. I've come to the conclusion that the carbs need cleaned. Am I right in this conclusion?
Also, I plan on removing that POS airbox and installing some 54 mm pod filters, should I go ahead and rejet to 130 for my main jet? Thanks in advance!

Yes your carbs need to be removed & thoroughly cleaned.I wouldn't do any mods till you have the bike running properly. Also these engines meed a valve adjustment/check every 5 to 7 thousand miles. If you try to do mods (Remove air box) before bike is running properly. You will be in for a world of hurt & disappointment.
